Having a significant other, for the most part, is a wonderful thing. Finding someone with whom we can share our views, dreams and ambitions is something all of us desire. Being part of a couple makes life more meaningful and interesting. However, when one partner gets involved in something harmful such as opting for an unhealthy lifestyle, the possibility of the other mate following suit is certainly strong.
It is not uncommon for couples to gain weight together. A busy working couple for instance, may find it more convenient to eat fast food and TV dinners and just plop down on the sofa after a long day at work. With such a lifestyle, they will find themselves overweight or even obese sooner or later. In the same way that their being a couple can lead them to become fat and lazy, it can be the very thing that will help them get out their unhealthy and pathetic state. There are a lot of benefits to dieting with your partner. Below are some practical tips to help both of you make the most of your weight loss effort as a pair.
Use the dieting experience to strengthen your relationship. Sharing common interests make people closer but sharing common goals and working towards these goals together can give more depth and meaning to a relationship. If you share a weight loss goal with your partner, you already have an edge over people who are trying to lose with by their lonesome self. The support and motivation is already built-in and the sense of accomplishment when both of you achieve your weight loss goals will be doubly sweet.
Be a good example. This is especially true if you notice that your partner does not have the same level of commitment as you. Instead of letting yourself be influenced by your partner, work harder at getting him or her to become 100% into it as you are. Exert more effort at doing what needs to be done. If you are persistent and dead serious about making it work, it would eventually rub off on your partner and he or she would be following your example.
Give each other support. There would be a point when you or your partner will feel like cheating on your diet. It is during these critical periods when you can really show your support for each other.
Make a full commitment to your new lifestyle. The decision to lose weight must be a serious one. The process can be long and difficult and a person who is not fully committed will quit at the slightest trouble. You and your partner should agree to commit to the new lifestyle no matter what believing that success will be achieved in due time.
See change as a necessary step towards success. Weight loss requires a lot of changes in lifestyle and if you or your partner is resistant to change, then it is pointless to even try to lose weight. You both have to agree right at the very start that changes have to be made in order to attain your weight loss goals. Admittedly, these changes can be very difficult, but the key to success is having a positive attitude towards them. Remind each other that harvest time is coming and that both of you would reap a great harvest if you work hard. Accepting change will make the ride a lot easier.
Losing weight is going to be a long and arduous process but with you and your partner working as a team, you can create great memories winning the battle of the bulge together.
