Whitening Your Teeth from Home

One of the things that can have the most dramatic effect on making a person appear younger and more beautiful is their smile. A straight, white smile is the signature of a person who has taken good care of their teeth and has good hygiene.

At least, this was the case until recently. Today there are many different techniques through which you can gain back your youthful, white smile.

Many of these procedures will only take a few hours to complete. Others will take longer, but the results may last longer as well.

Some of the procedures are very costly. Other methods are much more affordable.

A few of the procedures have to be performed by a professional, authorized dentist. Others you will be able to apply from the comfort of your own home.

The price is probably one of the largest factors in determining which procedure you will use. The procedures that have to be performed by a dentist often range between $400 and thousands of dollars to complete.

Many of these procedures must be performed more than once to reach the results that you desire. This can become very costly very quickly.

On the other hand, home treatment procedures are often much cheaper. One of the most popular forms of home treatment is the use of whitening strips.

Whitening strips can be purchased at the store and they are very easy to apply. Simply place the strips over your teeth according to the directions on the package.

The strips are effective in whitening your teeth because they clean abrade the layers of tartar and plaque on the teeth. Plaque is one of the most destructive things you could have on your teeth.

Over time, it attaches to your teeth and becomes very hard to remove. Some brands of whitening strips will be more effective than others.

An effective brand will be able to remove even the plaque that has latched on to your teeth. This method is very popular because it is easy to apply, but the whitening strips can be fairly expensive when compared with other home teeth whitening procedures.

You may find that some of your stains are so bad that the whitening strips cannot remove them. If this is the case, you may want to try bleaching your teeth.

Bleach is a stronger chemical than the chemicals that the whitening strips contain. It will cause a chemical reaction with the plaque and tartar that will loosen the bond between the bacteria and the tooth.

You must be careful when using this method because the bleach will also eat away at your tooth enamel. This will make the tooth more susceptible to plaque, tartar, and staining in the future.

However, if properly used, bleach can be very effective in whitening your teeth. It is also one of the easiest treatments to apply.

There is a third home treatment that uses baking soda and peroxide. This method is most appealing to those who are seeking a natural way to whiten their teeth.

All you have to do is mix the baking soda and peroxide together to make a paste like substance. Then, brush your teeth with it the way that you would normally used toothpaste.

The baking soda is a very abrasive substance. It is best if you can keep it off of your gums, particularly if your gums are sensitive.

There are also many types of toothpaste that are designed to whiten your teeth as well. Some of these toothpastes contain baking soda.

This is by far the easiest way to whiten teeth if you have the habit of brushing your teeth already. The only potential down side is that whitening toothpastes generally take longer to become effective than many other methods of whitening teeth.

Some people have also taken to chewing gum that has components that are designed to help whiten teeth. This kind of gum can be chewed daily, provides fresher breath, cleans teeth after meals, and exercises the jaw.

Another factor that may be affecting your ability to maintain white teeth is if you are a steady coffee drinker or tobacco user. These two habits are the primary causes of teeth becoming stained.

By decreasing, or stopping, both of these habits, you will protect your teeth and help them become whiter and brighter.
There are many options when it comes to whitening your teeth. You simply need to decide which methods fit your lifestyle, personality and budget the best.
