Arthritis is defined as follows: “arthro” which means joint and “itis” meaning inflammation. Therefore arthritis is a disease whereby the joints are inflammed to a point that they are almost destroyed. There are several types of arthritis but osteoarthritis is the most common form of this disease.
Osteoarthritis is defined as the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage is the substance found between the bones and it acts as a cushion. Cartilage is mostly water and when pressure is applied to the joint areas it tends to spread out the force hence reducing pressure on the bones. Cartilage also has Chondrocytes which are meant for generating new cartilage fragments.
The onset of Osteoarthritis is at times made worse by the immune system. The immune sends the white cells themselves contain enzymes that are to break down cartilage thus hampering the healing of the cartilage. Since the cartilage has no blood stream directed to it, the ability to heal itself is minimized.
Some people tend to be more vulnerable to osteoarthritis compared to others. Gender-wise, women tend to be more at risk compared to men. Other factors include: age, weight issues and genetic issues.
Injury near the joint area is also a major risk leading to osteoarthristis.
Weak muscles also play a role in facilitating this disease. This why, strength training is advocated for as a way to fight this disease.
The muscles play a very important role in protecting the joints. The cartilage comes in the event that a certain force is greater than what the muscle can handle. This is why having strong muscles is of the essence. Weak muscles will cause the cartilage to wear out more. The more the shocks reach the cartilage, the more it is destroyed and the joints become awfully painful such that one cannot be able to train anymore. As a further result, the muscles weaken and the joints become more vulnerable to further damage.
The worst probable news is that cartilage does not grow a new but on the hand one may build muscles enough to protect the cartilage from further damage.
Researchers have found out that strength training is the best method to fight arthritis. This was discovered after conducting a survey on how different patients conducted their treatments. Since arthritis has been a bone of contention over the years several ways of treatment had been improvised to fight arthritis. Among these methods were aerobic exercises where the patients were encouraged to take walks or climb stairs in order to increase the flexibility of the muscles. Other patients were encouraged to increase their rest time while others were put under heavy medications to curb the pain they experienced while walking or working.
All these methods plus strength training were put in to study for about four months. At the end of the study, the patients who were under the strength training regimen had about 41% improvement in their physical abilities while those under medication remained at the same level. The patients under strength exercises also experienced substantial growth of their quadriceps were able to walk and climb more easily and they also registered an improvement in their self confidence and esteem.
Therefore bodybuilders should plan to lift more in order to build more strength for the joints to be more healthy and strong.
