Massage therapy is considered a form of alternative medicine nowadays. People resort to the relief given by kneading or gliding strokes instead of taking oral pain relievers. With this, they decrease the risk of internal organ damage due to unnecessary intake of pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications.
Most people see massage per se as an ideal form of relaxation and rejuvenation. They resort to it because massage is a natural form of detoxification and cell renewal. It improves blood circulation and promotes healing to specific parts of the body.
Health spas all over the world come up with their own interpretation of the ideal massage. Most of them use local materials, usually those they harvest or grow within the premises of their spa. As a result, each spa from each country or continent is unique in providing the ultimate massage therapy experience.
But wherever you go, massages that include hot stones are always present. It is because this type of massage is very intense and very reliable in targeting the trigger points that need attention. Massage therapists make sure that they incorporate this procedure in their line of services because the combination of heat and touch results to healing.
Stone massage therapy involves the strategic placement of hot stones on areas of the body that are prone to having trigger points or pain spots. It also requires the kneading and gliding motions with the use of hot stones on these problem areas to provide relief.
What do therapists consider when they place all those different sizes of stones on various areas of the body, particularly the back area? Read on!
a.) Size of the stone. Massage therapists always place the large stones first on the back of the client. They place them on areas of the back that are prone to strains and pressure such as shoulders, shoulder blades, hips, trapezious muscles, which are larger areas of the back. The large stones retain heat the longest and therefore, could be left in place until all of the other smaller stones are strategically placed on other areas of the back. The smallest stones are placed on the palms and digits that are exposed when the client is in the prone position.
b.) Heat of the stones. Hot stones can be harmful to both the therapist and the client. As a precaution, they use hand towels or tongs to handle them. In stone massage sessions, therapists always consider how hot the stones are for the client to take. So, before they continue with further placement of the stones, they always ask the client if the hot stones are okay for them to endure throughout the session. The massage therapist keeps an ice bath handy if the stones are too hot.
c.) Trigger points. Points of pain along the back require special attention. Massage therapists take this into consideration and place the hot stones on areas where they are needed. They also use the working stones to work those tissues as the massage progresses.
Stone massage therapy provides the much needed relaxation and renewal of stress immersed individuals nowadays. People can harness the healing benefits of this special treatment when it is done right, and when proper information is given to both the therapist and the client.
