Bacterial vaginosis is one of the common infections that women encounter when it comes to the upset of bacteria in the vaginal area. Although this may not cause an alarm, it is important that you have a good knowledge on what is bacterial vaginosis ,as this may also cause problems later especially if it is left untreated.
When it comes to vaginal infections, the first thing that might come into your mind is whether the disease can be sexually transmitted. If you have bacterial vaginosis, you may be comforted to know that this infection is not sexually transmitted. However, multiple sex partners can also increase your risk of developing one.
Learning what is bacterial vaginosis is a must then to be able to get rid and avoid this infection before it can cause more health problems. In fact, this infection does not only involve the vaginal area but may affect other organs such as your ovaries, and when that happens, you may be dealing with a more complicated problem.
Causes
Although the exact cause of this infection has not yet been pinpointed, there are factors that have been identified that lead to the development of such infection. The upset of the balance of bacteria in the vaginal area for example is one and this imbalance can often happen if you douche when cleaning your vaginal area. Using perfumed soaps and cleaners may also cause irritation and may lead you to being more prone to infections like bacterial vaginosis.
Having multiple sex partners can also make you more prone to this disease as well, thus you may not only fear for sexually transmitted diseases in this case but also other infections such as bacterial vaginosis.
Signs and symptoms
One challenge of this infection is that, the signs and symptoms may not be detected at first, but one thing that can help you detect it is the smell of the vaginal discharge which can sometimes smell foul especially after intercourse. However, even this can mean other diseases like sexually transmitted ones, and thus, getting good diagnosis is one thing that you need to have to be able to confirm the infection.
How To Treat and Prevent It
Most often, treatments to this type of infection involves antibiotics prescribed your doctor, but you can also find natural treatments for such infection. You may also find ways to prevent and avoid it as well. Herbs that have good antibacterial properties such as garlic are also good natural remedies.
Practicing good hygiene is also important in preventing and getting rid of this infection but always do away with douching as well as using perfumed soaps. Get off your wet bathing suit and keep the vaginal area clean and dry as well. You may need to choose cotton underwear to allow the area to breathe and keep it from accumulating moisture.
Especially when you are pregnant, it is indeed important that you find ways to treat this infection as this may also lead to preterm births and other complications. With a good knowledge on what is bacterial vaginosis, you can actually save yourself from a lot of troubles and health problems.
