Physicians get asked “What causes hemorrhoids?” by patients everyday. Your anus, or rectum, has veins that, when stretched because of an increase in pressure, may swell or bulge. These swollen veins are hemorrhoids.

One of the common causes of hemorrhoids is straining while having a bowel movement. You may be straining because you are constipated or have diarrhea. Constipation is a common ailment for those lacking proper fiber intake, inadequate water or fluid intake, and/or not enough physical activity. Adding fiber to the diet and drinking more water every day are two of the easiest ways to assist your body in preventing hemorrhoids. Some form of daily exercise or activity is also recommended as it assists in hemorrhoid prevention.

Another common cause is sitting on the toilet too long.
One easy way to discourage sitting on the toilet for longer than necessary is to discourage reading or listening to music when in the bathroom.
Magazines, books, and I-pods should not be accessible to the area around the toilet bowl.

Hemorrhoids can also be caused by obesity. Doctors believe that the hemorrhoids form because excess weight adds pressure to the anal area. The longer a person is obese can also be a factor to the severity of the hemorrhoidal issue.

A lifestyle change in eating habits and exercise will help to reduce the excess weight that is causing pressure in the anal area. More fiber through fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains will also assist in getting rid of hemorrhoids in people who are heavier than average.

Approximately 50% of pregnant women will experience hemorrhoids at some time during their pregnancy. This is because the enlarged uterus presses on the veins which will cause them to bulge and swell.

Hemorrhoids normally disappear once the uterine weight and pressure on the anal area is removed.

It must be noted that heavy lifting or straining may also induce hemorrhoids. Unusual lifting and straining can harm your body and the stress can affect the anal veins causing the hemorrhoids.

Never move heavy items by yourself. Get a buddy or use an equipment assist like a platform lifter or dolly. If your body is not used to heavy lifting, chances are you will be taking a gamble that may harm your body, probably short term and possibly long term. Be sensible when lifting heavy items to avoid over straining your body.

Hemorrhoids are definitely more likely to occur as a person ages. The supporting tissue that cradles your rectum veins may weaken and stretch with age.

A regular stretching and strength training regimen will help build up your muscles so that they can better support connective tissues. A stronger heart through activity will encourage and support better blood flow which will also assist in avoiding having hemorrhoids.

A quick recap on what causes hemorrhoids is that with changes to eating habits, bathroom routines, and lifestyle changes through exercise, most people can either avoid or improve their hemorrhoid health. Making a few small changes in everyday activities can bring large returns in the way your body acts and feels.
