Walking as a Form of Exercise

One of the most popular forms of exercise is simply walking. Walking can be very enjoyable when the weather is nice and beautiful outside.

However, when the weather turns sour, you may want to retreat indoors to a home treadmill. Whether walking on the treadmill or outside, there are some things that you should do while you work out to make sure that you get a good work out.

When you walk, you are not only using your legs, but your arms, abdomen and many other parts. This is part of why walking is such a great aerobic exercise.

Due to the fact that it uses your entire body, it is also a great way to burn unwanted calories and lose weight. In addition, it can help strengthen your muscles, stamina, flexibility and balance.

This form of exercise may also boost your metabolism and your energy levels. It has also been known to help people sleep better and let go of stress and anxiety better.

Walking also improves your cardiovascular health which lowers your blood pressure and reduces the likelihood that you will develop heart disease or osteoporosis. In addition, it offers one benefits that running cannot offer.

That is that walking is much easier on the joints than running. Running for an extended period of time can cause joint injuries because of the impact, but with walking you will have no such worry.

If you are planning on starting a walking program, you will want to begin by only going for twenty to thirty minutes two or three times a week. As walking may seem like an easy activity, you may want to go longer when you first begin your program.

However, give your body time to adjust to the exercise anyway and only increase the intensity or the length of time you walk after you are sure that your body has adjusted. In addition, it is very important that you set goals for yourself to achieve.

These goals are what will keep you motivated to continue exercising even when you do not feel like it or when it becomes hard. A goal you may set may simply be working out three times this week.

Or you may set a goal to walk a certain distance in a certain amount of time. Another popular goal is losing a certain amount of weight.

The goal that you set must be based on the reason you want to exercise. It cannot be based on the fact that your boyfriend wants you to lose weight because it will not generate enough desire in you to keep up your motivation.

When you do achieve one of your goals, no matter how small, be sure to reward yourself so that you will continue to be motivated by goals. Once your body adjusts to walking, you may want to add a pair of hand weights to the regimen.

The hand weights will work out your upper body and help your arms get stronger. This may help you accomplish another one of your goals.

Once the simple hand weights are not enough, you may want to carry heavier weights or you may want to use two walking sticks. Studies have found that when you use two walking sticks, which you can even do on an incline on the treadmill, you can burn up to twenty percent more calories.

This is a huge difference and it may help achieve your weight loss goals. In order for your walk to be effective every day, you need to make sure that you maintain a good posture throughout your entire workout.

When you walk you should feel tall, even if you are not. Stretch yourself up and look forward instead of at the ground.

You should not look at any of the ground that is less than 20 feet ahead of you. This will keep your head and chin up.

Relax your shoulders down and bring your chest forward. Tighten your abs, buttocks and back while bringing your pelvis a little forward to help your balance.

You should also bend your arms to a 90 degree angle, cup your hands, swing your arms from the back to the front. Do not swing your arms from left to right as this is a waste of energy and it can ruin your posture.

The faster you swing your arms that faster your feet will move if your legs are feeling tired. Walking is a great form of exercise whether outside or on the treadmill if you perform it correctly.
