If you are considering having a facelift, it is a good idea to understand the entire process that you are going to experience. This article suggests what you can expect when you decide to undergo one of these procedures, so that you can decide if you want to proceed.

If you are considering undergoing a facelift, it is important to understand exactly what the process entails. Any kind of plastic surgery is not a light matter, and knowing what is involved will help you to understand if you would like to proceed or not.

A facelift is a surgical method that removes excess facial skin to make the face appear younger. Often women who are entering their forties and fifties would like to erase some of the wrinkles from the face, through one of these surgeries.

As our faces age, they lose elasticity in the skin, which causes it to droop and lose its tone. Also, excess fat in the face can cause an unwanted look, which many women would like to erase.

Most women who choose to have a facelift do not simply stop at this procedure. This procedure is often accompanied by additional surgeries to compliment it, including a neck lift, eyelid surgery, liposuction, forehead lifts, brow lifts, chemical peels, cheek implants, etc.

The traditional facelift procedure is performed through an incision starting in the hair or hairline above and in front of the ear. The incision is extended downward in front of the ear, comes under the ear, and then upward behind the ear ending in the hair or hairline.

Your plastic surgeon will lift the skin and fatty tissue off of the underlying muscles and connective tissues, so that they are no longer hanging loose. They are pulled forward as much as the surgeon sees necessary.

The underlying muscle and fascia can be tightened with sutures, depending on the circumstances and the wishes of your surgeon. Be sure to talk to your surgeon before the procedure, about exactly how tight you would like your face to be.

If they know exactly what look you desire, they will better be able to direct the procedure to fit your expectations. Moving on in the process, the skin is pulled back and upward and the excess skin removed.

Once the process is done, the doctor will close the open wound using sutures, or perhaps skin staples. They may choose to leave a drain in the wound so that all of the excess blood can be siphoned out.

They will apply sterile bandages to the area, so that it can remain dry and clean. There are some risks and complications which can occur when you choose to undergo this type of procedure.

These complications are very infrequent, thought they sometimes do occur. Knowing what can possibly happen will help you to decide if you want to take the risk or not.

Sometimes excessive bleeding can occur, causing bruising and hematomas. This is not serious, but is something which should be monitored by your doctor.

Infection can occur in some cases, and can be quite serious. Your plastic surgeon will teach how you to care for your wounds, to ensure that they remain sterile at all times.

Infection is something that should be avoided very carefully, at all costs. Very serious infections can even cause death if they are allowed to develop.

In some cases, scaring can occur which can be unattractive. Loss of hair can also occur in some areas around the incision site, though this is not usually the case.

Though temporary, some people have reported feeling a neurological dysfunction which causes them to lose sensation in their face for a short amount of time. In some more serious cases, there can be an unevenness between the two sides of the face, which can be quite irritating.

Most patients are very satisfied with the results of their surgery, especially when they have a very good plastic surgeon performing the work. Most women report that they feel they look younger-the results last for about ten years, in general.

You may find that you have some pain during recovery, though your doctor will help you know how to manage it. The day after your surgical procedure, your dressings will be taken off, and your wound inspected.

If any aggravation does occur to the surgical area, then you may find that the recovery time is lengthened as a direct result. For a quick recovery, it is advisable that the patient relaxes in order to promote a fast recovery.
