Undergoing any kind of plastic surgery involves a certain amount of risk, and recovery. However, if you are completely set having work done, and you understand all that is involved in the procedure, you can be very happy with the outcome.
Chin implant surgery is for those who are not happy with the shape or size of the chin. It is also referred to as mentoplasty, and during this process an implant is inserted, made of either solid silicone, or a material known as Medpor.
Those who are interested in having this procedure usually feel that they have a weak chin in proportion to the rest of their facial features. It balances out the face, and allows the chin to be in proportion with the cheekbones.
If you are going to be a good candidate for this surgery, you should not smoke, and be in good health. Your jaw should function normally, and you should have a strong immune system, so that you do not get any kind of infection from the surgery.
Make sure that you keep your expectations realistic, and do not expect perfection. If you decide that you want to move forward with the surgical process.
Your surgeon will usually order pre-op lab tests to confirm your health status. They may also require that you adjust, cease, or begin taking certain medications in the week or two before your procedure.
You will probably want to avoid taking aspirin and any kind of anti-inflammatory drugs for two weeks prior. You should stop smoking right away, if you currently smoke.
You will have many different shapes to choose from when it comes to your chin size, and your doctor can help you choose one that will best fit your face. They will also discuss with you where the incision is going to be made.
After the surgery is done, you can return to non-strenuous work even twenty-four hours after surgery, though you should not drive if you are taking any medications. Do not exercise or do anything strenuous for two to three weeks.
While recovering, you may experience a feeling of tightness in the chin area, and it is normal for some facial movements to be temporarily more difficult. If you are still in severe pain, make sure that you let your plastic surgeon know right away.
While this may seem all well and good, there are many risks that can be involved as well. Sometimes scarring and discoloration can occur, which may be worse than your dislikes prior to the surgery.
Infection can sometimes occur, depending on your case, and if it is bad enough you may need to remove the implant completely. Excessive bleeding can happen as well, and a hematoma can occur, which can be deadly.
Blood clots can occur, and wounds can be slow to heal. There can be persistent pain which can continue to occur, and in some cases cardiac complications can occur as well.
If you feel like you have shortness of breath, an unusual heartbeat, or excessive bleeding after the procedure, you need to speak to your doctor right away. These surgeries usually cost anywhere from twenty five hundred to sixty thousand dollars.
It will depend on how prestigious and qualified your surgeon is, as well as your geographic area. Make sure that you know all of the costs involved, above and beyond the actual procedure.
If you are going to have your chin done, you may want to think about another surgery as well. Many patients choose to have multiple procedures to compliment ones that they have already done, including a nose job, jaw implants, or more.
However, if you are happy with the way your chin looks, you should try to adjust to just the one procedure before you begin planning the next one. Swelling will need to decrease, before you know exactly how it is going to look in conjunction with the rest of your face.
Most swelling should subside within the first four to six weeks, although your final result may not be fully complete until up to six months following your surgery. When incisions are placed on the inside of the mouth, you will have no outwardly visible scars.
If at any point your implant appears to have shifted position, contact your physician right away. If you know everything that is involved and you are prepared, you will be happy with the outcome.
