Underarm Whitening – What is it? Who does it? Is it safe? What ingredients are dangerous?
Underarm whitening is the process of lightening the underarm’s skin tone either through the use of natural ingredients such as lemon juice and or through the use of cosmetic underarm bleaching creams and gels. Consumers who perform this procedure vary from those that have slowly developed very dark underarms and are now looking for treatment as well as those consumers that have a slightly discolored underarm skin tone and are looking for lighter, pinker tone.
Generally speaking, it is safe to use most underarm whitening products. However, there are some ingredients which need to be paid close attention. For example, Hydroquinone is used in many skin lightening products sold throughout the world. Based on evidence which has linked this ingredient to cancer as well as other health problems, it is probably in your best interest to avoid using Hydroquinone, especially on the sensitive underarm skin.
That said, there are some ingredients used in underarm whitening products which are both safe and effective. Alpha Arbutin for example fulfills both of these criteria. Clinical studies have shown that using Alpha Arbutin is not only an effective way to prohibit new skin from developing color (pigment), therefore making it a smart choice to include in skin lightening formulas, but these same tests also showed that Alpha Arbutin is safe to use as it is a naturally occurring ingredient.
Do Men Get Dark Underarms?
Yes, men sometimes get dark underarms, although they generally develop them less often than woman due to the fact that this condition often develops due to over-shaving or waxing, something only a few men do.
However, some men who have hyperpigmented skin still search for and use underarm whitening products. The desire for the perfect skin tone is not limited by gender, race, location, or finances. Speaking of finances, there are many lightening products available which cost less than $50. This is important because some luxury skin care brands can exceed $100 for a very small amount. Often, consumers end up paying more for the label rather than what is inside the label.
Remember, if you have dark underarms and want an underarm whitening treatment, take your time to learn more about each product’s formula.
Creams vs. Gels
Another variable you need to be aware of is if the underarm whitening product is a gel or cream. Cream based treatments are often less expensive for a reason…they do not absorb as well as gels do. This means that some of the cream you place on your skin will be wasted. While gels tend to be slightly more expensive, they also absorb much more effectively. This means that you will only need to use a small amount of the gel to do the job.
It is also important to note, that using an underarm whitening treatment will take a few weeks to produce results. This is because, as stated earlier, ingredients like Alpha Arbutin inhibit new skin from developing skin color which means that you will have to wait for old skin to be replaced by new skin. After a few weeks, the results should be quite noticeable.
