Trifocal Eyeglasses and Contact Lenses

Advertisements

As we grow older and reach closer to forty our clarity of vision is compromised gradually. Presbyopia is inevitable as we cross the age mark of forty. However, there is nothing to worry about. With constant advances in technology and science spectacle lenses and contacts are becoming more and more progressive. They offer maximum comfort at competitive price ranges so that the average person can save himself or herself the annoyance of having lines across his spectacle lenses.

Those suffering from the condition of presbyopia have three problems:

1. Close range focusing
2. Distance vision
3. Intermediate clarity

What are Trifocals?
This is where we introduce the concept of trifocals. Bifocals have ruled the scene for quite some time now. However, with three sorts of range problems in vision due to presbyopia trifocal lenses deal with each of them separately, correcting them progressively.

Spectacles made of trifocal lenses do not have any demarcations on them suggesting the condition of presbyopia. Therefore, wearing these lenses is perfectly normal. If you want to personalize the spectacles according to your style and taste you can always choose a nice frame to suit your face.

Reading glasses are recommended to many patients as part of short distance vision correction. This is all very well until you start having problems with intermediate range as well. Carrying reading glasses and putting them on while focusing on near objects and then changing into your bifocals can be a tedious process. Trifocals are the best option in such a case. With progressive lenses there is no fuzziness of vision. These are also known as varifocals, power progressive lenses or graduate lenses.

Contact Lenses with Ring Correction

If you don’t want to use spectacles on a day to day basis you can always opt for contact lenses. No longer do you need to wear hard contacts for presbyopic vision. The discomfort associated with such lenses is high.

Contact lenses are made specially to suit the needs of patients suffering from all three kinds of vision problems mentioned above. Such contact lenses are constructed with separate rings demarcating the vision correction according to the distance focused on. In case of close objects you look through one region of the contact lens made with a specific technology. In case of distance focusing you look through another region of the lens made with a different technology.

In case of presbyopia if you have a power of -4 diopters and the corrective power prescribed for you is 3, leaving you with an additional -1, the intermediate range correction becomes -2.5 diopters. Due to progressive lenses you can wear spectacles with smooth lenses as well as contact lenses to avoid having specs resting on the bridge of your nose.

Lasik Surgery

If you want neither you may opt for Lasik surgery. This is a form of corrective eye surgery that deals with the smoothness of the tissues on the surface of your cornea. Although this is a permanent corrective procedure, the presbyopic symptoms may recur after 10 years.
