If you have noticed very brightly colored, pronounced veins beginning to rise to the surface all over your body, they can be very unattractive and uncomfortable. There are ways that you can treat them with the help of a plastic surgeon, but first you must understand exactly what they are.
Veins have different sizes depending on their location and their function. The largest veins are in the center of the body; these collect the blood from all the other smaller veins and channel it into the heart.
The branches of these large veins get smaller and smaller as they move away from the center of the body. The veins closer to the skin surface are called superficial veins.
The ones that are deeper and closer to the center of the body are considered deep. These lines can bulge with pools of blood when they fail to circulate properly.
These visible and bulging lines, called varicose veins, are more common in the legs and thighs, but can develop anywhere in the body. They are large, bulging, and very visible to the eye-they are generally long and dilated, meaning they are greater than four millimeters in diameter.
Smaller ones can appear all over the surface, and look like a spider is under the surface of your skin. They cluster together in a web-like maze, and are generally found on the thighs, ankles, and feet.
They can even appear on the surface of your face, which can be very difficult to cope with. Exactly what causes this to occur is not completely known or understood.
Some plastic surgeons feel that they occur when there is a weakness in the valves, causing poor circulation. Valves normally act to ensure that blood does not go the wrong direction, away from the heart.
In other cases, weaknesses in the walls may cause the pooling of the blood. The walls of the blood vessels can become weaker and less competent than normal, causing the volume of blood to increase, which leads to the physical manifestations that you see on the epidermis.
In some cases, disease can be the cause of this problem, though only your doctor will be able to determine this. Diseases that cause this problem can include phlebitis, blood clots, congenital abnormalities of the vessels, venous disease, etc.
If you have any of these problems or diseases, talk to your doctor right away about how you can treat the symptoms that you see and experience. Exercising regularly and maintaining a normal weight is one of the best things you can do to prevent a problem from becoming more serious.
Your doctor may prescribe support hoes, which can be worn to help a problem from becoming worse. These compression stockings are very helpful, and can make a big difference in your treatment.
There are other treatments which are also available, including different plastic surgeries, therapies, etc. It may help to keep your legs elevated while you are sitting and sleeping, as much as possible. Another option is sclerotherapy, which involves the injecting of liquid into the vessels.
Laser therapy can also be used, when done by an experienced plastic surgeon. The swollen veins can also be stripped from under the surface, though this can be very painful.
In general, sclerotherapy and laser therapy are the best treatments that you can receive, through a plastic surgeon. Treatment is not always necessary, and is usually voluntary and elective.
Thousands of people every year consider getting treatment for this problem. Be sure to talk to your plastic surgeon about everything that is involved in the process, so that you can decide if you want to proceed with the treatment or not.
These treatments can be costly and painful, and should only be attempted if you feel you cannot live with them any longer. It is a good idea to try gentler options first, including compression stockings, elevation, etc.
Be sure to talk to your doctor about everything you are feeling and experiencing, so that you can make the best decision for your treatment together. The better you understand all that is involved in the procedures, the more informed of a decision you will be able to make-you do not have to live with the pain any longer, thanks to the advancements in plastic surgery.
