Top 7 Procedures Used in the Treatment of Warts

Warts are rough-surfaced tumors, growing on various locations on the skin. The fact that many of them tend to go away on their own within a few months notwithstanding, many people feel compelled to seek treatments for them with a view to eradicate them more quickly. The treatments also come in handy in the eradication of warts that have simply ‘refused’ to go away on their own, even after the time periods by which they should have done so.

There are two main routes used in the treatment of warts. One is through the use medications. The second one is through the use of procedures – which are our focus here.

1) One of the procedures that have shown considerable success in the treatment of warts is laser treatment. Here, the idea is to use the energy inherent in high-intensity light to get rid of the warts, through the selective absorption of water molecules in the warts (in the case of carbon dioxide lasers), and selective absorption of blood cells from the warts (in the case of pulse dye lasers). The beauty of laser treatment is that it can be extremely effective. The downside to laser treatment in the treatment of warts is that it can be both painful and expensive.

2) The second procedure used in the treatment of warts is curettage. It is a back to basics surgical treatment, where the warts (being tumors) are simply scrapped from their sites. Naturally, this is painful, and has to be done under anesthesia.

3) The third procedure used in the treatment of warts is coagulation. This is done using infrared rays. The idea behind this is pretty much like the idea behind laser treatment previously mentioned – with the infrared coagulation only being much cheaper. The pain remains though, as does the risk of leaving scars in the wake of the treatment.

4) The fourth procedure used in the treatment of warts is keratolysis (removal of dead skin cells – keratin), either chemically through the use of an agent like salyclic acid, or mechanically, using an agent like a blade or pumice (scrubbing) stone. Contrary to the way it sounds, this is one of the least painful procedures that can be used in getting rid of warts from the skin.

5) The fifth procedure used in the treatment of warts is electrodesiccation.

6) the sixth procedure used in the treatment of warts is injection of agents to biologically combat the warts, at the sites they manifest. Agents such as trichophyton antigents or candida have been shown to combat warts quite effectively, when directly injected where the warts are manifesting.

7) The seventh procedure that can be used in the treatment of warts is cryosurgery – which is more or less ‘freezing’ the warts, to effectively get rid of them. The idea here is to cut off the connection between the wart and the epidermal layer of the skin. This way, the wart – deprived of things it needs for life – has to eventually fall off, giving the person on whom it was resident relief.
