Exploring the internet search statistics carefully, it emerges that nail-fungus is one of the conditions around which there seems to be considerable interest. Indeed, it seems to be worry that people have regarding nail fungus. This is surprising, seeing that nail fungus tends not to be one what can be termed as ‘too serious’ conditions. Hence the question as to why nail fungus – while not typically ‘too serious’ a condition – is nonetheless so worrying.
1) One of the top 2 probable reasons nail fungus can be such a worrying condition is because it is a disfiguring condition. It is a condition which has been to render sufferers unable to wear open shoes: for fear of coming across as a people who don’t take good care of themselves (which is a bad reflection). Now living as we are in an extremely image conscious society, it follows that conditions that have potential to affect one’s appearance – in however marginal a manner- are likely to cause quite a bit of worry. Having seen a friend distressed about nail fungus, one finds themselves worried whether they could also get the condition. So they go searching online for information about causes of nail fungus – adding, once more, to the considerable number of people looking for information on the condition.
As it turns out, in today’s society, every aspect of a person’s appearance – from head to toe (literally) is assessed by others in a bid to determine where to ‘place’ him or her. Under this system, you naturally don’t want to be seen as having disfigured or flaked nails, as that would make you come out badly; and could actually cost you social (or even economic) opportunities.
2) The second probable reason as to why nail-fungus can be such a worrying condition is because there has been, for long, an aridity of information about it. So when people notice its effects on their body, they can’t quite know what is happening to them, triggering worry. Even when they are eventually handed a diagnosis that it is nail-fungus disfiguring their nails, they want to know what else it could do to them. So they go online looking for information looking for information like ‘nail fungus complications’ and so on, once again increasing the number of searches related to nail fungus.
As it turns out, most of us are ‘natural pessimists’ with a tendency to imagine the worst in every situation. Thus seeing on ourselves the effects of nail-fungus, and remembering that serious conditions tend to start in small ways, it would be understandable that we would want to know what next it could lead to. In this regard, all manner of scenarios play out in our minds. Could it lead to a need to have the whole finger amputated? Could it be a sign of impending gangrene? Could it lead to disability, by causing the whole foot or hand (as may be the case) to ‘rot’ and thus have to be cut off? Naturally, with thoughts like this, worry creeps in.
