Acne is one of the most distressing conditions that many people have to live through. It has an effect of tampering with a person’s otherwise great ‘looks’ – so that people started to perceive him or her as ‘good looking but…’ This can be a truly disconcerting thing, especially in an extremely image conscious society like the one we are living in today. You would never have enough time to count the number of teenagers who have missed on summer jobs (and other important opportunities) because of bad cases of acne they had.

Now various factors have been identified, as being probable causes of acne. There are cases of acne that are attributed to genetic heritage: where a person is genetically predisposed to acne. There are also cases of acne that are attributable to skin care habits: like where the use of certain skin care products (especially those that cause the blockage of pores on the skin) leads to the incidence of one type of acne. Then there are cases of acne that are attributed to stress, where intense stress triggers a hormonal reaction – ultimately causing acne. And there are also cases of acne attributable to diet, where consumption of certain foods is linked with incidence of acne in certain people.

One thing that holds in all cases of acne, though, regardless of the specific causes of them, is ‘low levels of certain nutrients in the body.’ The nutrients in question here are vitamin A and vitamin E. It has been observed that people who are found to have acne tend to be people with low levels of these nutrients in their body. This has led to a growing feeling in dermatological circles that adequate consumption of these nutrients may offer some protection against acne, regardless of the predispositions a person may have to the condition.

1) Vitamin A, which is part of what scientists refer to as the retinyl group occurs in a number of forms. One of the forms in which Vitamin A occurs is that of retinol. It can also occur in the form of retinoids, as it can occur in the form of carotenes. There are many foods that are rich in vitamin A. Liver (from many animals as well as poultry) is one such food, which is extremely rich in vitamin A. Carrot is a rich source of vitamin A, in the form of it known has carotene. Kales, spinach and sweet potato are other foods rich in vitamin A, as are eggs, papaya and mangoes.

2) Vitamin E on the other hand is also referred to as tocopherol, and it is antioxidant. The mechanism through which Vitamin E gets linked to acne is probably through the effect it has on metabolism of sex hormones, but this is still subject to conjecture. Foods rich in it include Avacado, eggs, spinach and wholegrain cereal-based foods.

What is worth noting about vitamin A and Vitamin E is that in addition to probably protecting you from acne, they also offer protection from a whole range of other conditions.
