The Ways Sunglasses Are Used

Sunglasses are a form of protective eyewear that work to minimize the damage to eyes otherwise likely from high-energy visible light or sun rays. Sometimes they are designed to also improve vision when made with colored, darkened, or polarized lenses. In other instances their use is to conceal identity or to make a fashion statement.

Sunlight is often too bright for comfort when individuals are outside and participating in outdoor activities. In addition, it is recommended by those in the health care field to protect eyes from the sun as a safety measure. If this is not done eyes may otherwise suffer damage from blue or ultraviolet light.

However, they are used for other purposes as well. They may be worn by celebrities in an attempt to hide their identity. They are also very popular as fashion accessories, particularly among individuals in a beach setting.

Sunglasses help with vision in two ways: they enhance eye comfort and minimize glare. Polarized lenses are very effective in glare reduction when looking at shiny surfaces, like water. Because of this, they are commonly worn by individuals while they fish. Wearing them allows individuals to look into water without being blinded by surface reflections.

When glasses are not used in high UV level situations, many ocular problems can occur. These include photokeratitis, eye cancer, apterygial, cataracts, and snow blindness. However, for the most benefit glasses must reduce the 400 nm long UVA and UVB rays by ninety nine if not one hundred percent. Labels on products showing they meet this requirement have a UV400 sticker.

It is very important that individuals, even when they are wearing glasses, never look directly into the sun. The protection provided will not be substantial enough to protect in this instance. This remains true even during a solar eclipse.

Another form of light that needs to be protected against is high-energy visible light. This is because it has been correlated with macular degeneration among older individuals. It is thought that amber colored lenses may block blue light and be useful to shield against damage. To do this well, products should reduce around ninety five percent of blue rays. Children may be particularly benefited with these shades, as their eyes can transmit more harmful light than adults. This is due to the fact that parts of the adult eye yellow with age.

Sunglasses are worn at night or indoors also, not to receive protection but as part of a statement. They may also be used to conceal emotions or to prevent eye contact. Some view them as fashion accessories, particularly products made by designers.

The use of sunglasses is recommended by most health professionals to keep eyes from being damaged by harmful light rays. These dangerous rays include UV as well as blue light versions, both capable of causing serious ocular issues. However, some items are more effective at shielding and others are less so. There are additional uses for these glasses also, such as avoiding eye contact, making a fashion statement, hiding emotion, or concealing eye abnormalities.
