We cannot deny worldwide that there is a general acceptance of the superiority of Western Medicine over all the healing arts that are now present in this planet. We cannot even deny the fact that Western Medicine has already advanced to such high degree and precision so as to explore the characteristics of life within the microscopic genes. When in the past, humanity has been plagued by virus and bacteria such as the Black Death, the yellow fever, and other epidemics that killed thousands, now we can say that we are in full control of even the smallest strain of virus and bacteria. Lifespan has significantly increased and health care has really improved so that we have actually been dependent on the solutions that modern medicine provides. In fact, western medicine has been so proud even to the point of ridiculing various types of alternative medicine such as massage, meditation, energy healing and many others.
But not all of western medicine can be considered good. Yes we were able to develop vaccinations and immunizations but we have in effect helped the virus develop into new and difficult strains. In fact, many diseases existing today are an indirect result of modern medicine. Another backlash is that we have been fixated with the short term solutions to illness provided by modern medicine and have forgotten to analyze the other aspects of disease. An example of this is the common headache. Every time we have a headache, we usually drink a pain reliever. But we never really analyzed the psychological and emotional dimensions of having a headache. We never even thought that an honest to goodness reflection and meditation could have the same effect as paracetamol. Here lies the problem, we have stressed too much on the physical body and have totally forgotten the role of the heart, the mind, and the spirit to the question of health or disease.
Now modern life has become so stressful. We move and act like robots and really work hard for the money. Soon stress will take its toll on our health, on our emotional well being, on our emotional state. Yet modern medicine only has cures for the manifestations and symptoms of the disease but not the root cause our lifestyle and the current societal structures that compel us to work like machines. Does modern medicine have a name for that? In fact, modern medicine does not have a name for energy healing. Energy which central to everything we do is actually a basic premise of Eastern medicine but has no name in Western Medicine.
Hindu, Chinese, and Japanese healing arts have a name for different types of energy such as chi, ki, shen, jing, and utilize this knowledge for healing. Although what we call it alternative healing, it is not savvy about cells, organs, genes and microscopic elements; alternative healing has a more comprehensive and encompassing framework that considers the emotional, mental, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of the disease. All these have their impact on the body is energy centers called chakras. Meditation and Reiki actually works wonders on health and wellbeing.
Emotion which is a given fact of life has not been factored in as a major cause of disease. In fact, when you have negative thoughts and emotions, your immune systems collapse. You body becomes susceptible to various types of energy blockage, disease and infections. On the other hand when you are in love, you immune system becomes stronger and you are loving thoughts promote energetic balance.
In Japan, the ancient healing art of Reiki considers all these as movements and dynamics of energy. Healing is therefore wholesome, all sided, and grounded in the various aspects of self and living.
