The Importance Of Fitness Motivation

Why can’t my fitness program sail as smoothly as the ones on TV? Yes, I watch those fitness programs on TV all the time, but the commercials showing “before and after” are accomplished in the blink of an eye, all the while I am still grunting and groaning on my treadmill. It’s so hard to stay motivated!

The human mind needs motivation on most things, whether it’s going to work in the morning, or working out. Sure going to work in the morning has behind it a great motivator—money—and besides that there’s always that little fact of life that we like nice things, and again money is involved.

Now, no one is going to stand behind you showering your head with gold coins for each rep you do raising weights, thus you need to find your own motivation in order to be healthy and fit.

• Set goals. Just as going to work has goals, such as going to Vegas on vacation, you will need goals to motivate you to exercise. Not nebulous goals but real goals such as losing X amount of pounds in X amount of time. Make the goals short term, or you won’t stick to them.

• Positive reinforcement. You may find that you will stick more to an exercise program if you do it with friends, or within a group. This is one of the reasons why weight loss works best in groups.

• Join fitness groups. This ties in with the last hint, however you need to find a group that has the same ultimate goals as yours.

• Accept failure and do not let it become defeating. Skipping an exercise class and going to a ball game is not really failure, it’s merely having a time out and you need to know that it does not change the ultimate picture or long term goal.

• Plateaus are going to happen; it’s a fact of life. There are always ups and downs in your physical fitness, learn to accept them gracefully and not ever allow them to discourage you.

• Set a realistic schedule. If you are a total ditz for the first 45 minutes of your morning and you are an unenergetic person in the mornings, it makes no sense to join a sunrise running club! On the other hand, if you are always dead tired after work, do not schedule exercise immediately after work.

Staying motivated is difficult, this is not TV where Jeannie just blinked and voila things began to happen. Use progress as a grading tool. For instance if you’ve managed to lose ten pounds go back and ponder yourself “before” and consider yourself “after.” If you were able to easily make a five mile run, go back mentally to when 5 blocks were difficult.

Remember that only you can make up your mind as to what motivates you to stick with a fitness regimen. Others people and other things may motivate you for a short time, but with a bit of luck, conscious experimentation and a whole lot of persistence, you’ll find the right plan that’s especially for you and that keeps your motivation high and your drive ever flowing.
