The majority of sexually transmitted diseases or STDs have no cure. They have flare ups and can be passed on to the next person. There is treatments to control these flare ups. HPV or human papillomavirus is a common type of STD. There is a vaccine out currently that will prevent the spread of HPV. This vaccine is only approved for certain HPV strains and for women of certain ages. HPV is a general STD term that many different diseases fall under. Genital warts is one of them. Genital warts is an entirely separate and passable STD all its own. There are symptoms of genital warts that need to be known so that is can be controlled and treated.

Genital warts are a symptom of HPV. When HPV is passed, genital warts are one of the symptoms that can occur. These warts can take on a whole other life of their own with their own symptoms and treatments.

Genital warts are highly contagious. It is passed through direct skin contact during oral sex, genital sex or anal sex. There is no cure for warts but there are treatments that can be done to control the wart flare ups.

In women, warts can occur both inside and outside the vagina. It can also be present on the anus. In men, warts most often show up on the tip of the penis but can also show up anywhere on the scrotum or on the anus. It is very rare but genital warts can also show up on the mouth or the throat. Men will most often not even know they have warts until they become large.

People can be carriers of warts for a long period of time before they start to show any signs. It may take months or even years before there are any signs or symptoms of genital warts. But once a person is infected, there is no getting rid of them. The can even be spread before any signs are seen.

Warts often appear in clusters. These clusters can be small or can grow to be very large. The most common symptoms will be irritation in the area that is infected. This area will become very itchy and may even bleed. But other than seeing the warts themselves, there are no symptoms that occur.

Genital warts will need to be diagnosed by a doctor. This is usually done by a visual inspection but a biopsy can also be done. After a confirmation is made, a treatment method can be decided on. They can be frozen off, they can be lasered off or an electric current can even be used to remove them. Even after they are removed though, there is no guarantee that you will never have another flare up as there is no true cure for them.

HPV and genital warts, even though they are very contagious, can be contained. The best way to not be infected is to know who you are having sexual relations with. Wear condoms for the least amount of exposure and refrain from sexual activity when there is a genital warts breakout. Though this will be a lifelong condition, this is something that can be controlled. It does not have to control you.
