Preventing Loss of Eyesight

While vision related surgical procedures are becoming more and more successful, it is generally best to avoid surgery as long as possible by taking preventative action to preserve your natural eyesight as long as possible. Even though most adults find they need glasses for various tasks by the time they turn 50 years old, there are several things you can do to make sure that your eyesight lasts as long as possible.

The reason that most people lose their eyesight as they age is that as you grow older, the lens of the eye loses flexibility. This means that the eye has a harder time changing focus as you shift from looking at items that are farther away to items that are much closer.

Fortunately there are many things you can do to help preserve your clear eyesight longer. One of the first things you may want to develop the habit of doing is looking away from tasks that require near vision often.

This will help your eyes relax as you view objects that require far vision. The stress on the eyes from focusing on close objects for long periods of time can cause premature aging of eyesight in some cases.

If you must do a task that requires looking at close objects for a long period of time, it is a good idea to take breaks as often as you can. Try standing up, stretching, breathing deeply, walking around, and going outside to look at distant scenery.

Breaks are not only good for your eyes, but they can be good for you in other ways as well. The second thing you will want to consider as you try to take care of your eyesight is the lighting that you working with.

It can be quite hard on your eyes to read or do other small tasks in dim light as the eyes have to strain to see clearly. This stress can also contribute to an earlier loss of clear eyesight.

In general, it is a very good idea to make sure that you have plenty of light to read, or perform other tasks, by. However, if the light is too strong as a result of it glaring off of a reflective surface, it can also cause damage to your vision.

The third thing you will want to consider is your posture as you work. While it is a good, healthy practice to sit straight while working to prevent back problems, it is also important to help preserve your eyesight.

By sitting up straight and keeping your task at a level that you can easily see, you will be reducing the stress that is placed on your eyes. Again, the less stress you place on your eyes, the better.

For most adults, the ideal distance to hold a task away from your face is about 14 to 16 inches. In addition, while reclining postures are very relaxing, they usually put more strain on the eyes as you read, watch the television, or perform other tasks.

Another thing you can do to relieve the stress on your eyes is to carefully monitor how you write. When you hold the pen or pencil close to the tip, you probably have to tilt your head to the side in order to see what you are writing and to make sure that you are writing legibly.

You can reduce the amount of work that you eyes must do by holding the pen or pencil about one inch from the tip instead so that you do not have to tip your head to see what you are writing. This can take some getting used to, so you will probably have to make a conscious effort to make sure that you write correctly.

In addition to taking these preventative measures, there are several things you can do to strengthen your eyes as well. One of the things that you may want to consider doing is signing up for an athletic team that will require you to see things in the distance.

Ultimate Frisbee, football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and a variety of other sports can provide you with health benefits for the rest of your body as well as for your eyes. Even hiking often stimulates far vision because you will often look at a distant horizon as you climb higher and higher.

In addition to going outside, you will also want to consider eating a healthy diet. Your eyes depend on many nutrients and vitamins to function correctly.

Fruits and vegetables contain a lot of the nutrients and vitamins that they need. In addition, you may want to consider taking supplements of lutein, zeaxanthin, and bilberry as they can help strengthen your eyesight.

It is also a very good idea to invest in a pair of good sunglasses that have UV ray protection to use during the summertime and other times during the year when it is bright outside. The UV rays from the sun can cause quite a bit of damage if you do not provide this protection.
