Preventing Infection after Your Plastic Surgery

If you have recently undergone any form of plastic surgery, it is very important that you learn how to protect yourself from infection. Infections can be very dangerous for your health and safety, and can cause lots of discomfort.

Infections can cause very dangerous complications, and should be avoided at all costs. There are a few things that you can do to ensure that you will not encounter these dangerous problems.

One of the first things you need to do is to wash your hands often, and properly. This means learning to wash your hands like those in hospitals do, using soaps, warm or hot water, and at least thirty seconds of time.

Try singing a song like happy birthday two times while you wash, to ensure that you are scrubbing for the right amount of time. Antibacterial soap is ideal, but it is not absolutely necessary-any soap will do.

Hand washing is the front line of defense against infection. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to keep your hands clean.

This is also true of anyone who may be helping you care for your incision after surgery, even if they wear gloves. The last thing you want is to introduce germs and bacteria into an open wound.

Next, make sure that you always take your antibiotics as prescribed by your plastic surgeon. Antibiotics are one of the best ways to prevent infection.

You may be tempted to quit taking them if they upset your stomach, or if you start feeling better, but finishing the entire prescription is essential to staying infection free. If you stop taking your antibiotic too soon, you may be at risk for developing very dangerous complications, which can end up risking your very life.

Next, you need to make sure that you are keeping your surgical site clean and dry at all times. The best way to keep your wound clean, if your surgeon permits, is to shower and clean the wound with a mild antibacterial soap.

Be sure to rinse the soap off well, as it can be irritating to our healing skin. Allow your incision to dry completely before applying a clean and dry bandage.

If you allow too much air to be exposed to the area, you can introduce too much bacteria to the area. Using harsh cleansers on the area is not a good idea, as it can cause dangerous problems and irritation.

If you are going to do any care for your wound, you need to make sure that your hands are clean, and that you are very careful and clean at all times.

If you are caring for your wound and you have not just gotten out of the shower, it is important that you wash your hands before you touch the incision or care for it. Putting on gloves can be a good idea as well, to make extra sure that you are being sanitary around the area at all times.

Make sure that your dressing remains clean and dry. You need to make sure that you stop smoking right away, as this can be dangerous to your recovery.

Smokers are much more likely to have an infection during their recovery from surgery. In fact, some studies have shown that a smoker may be up to six times more likely to end up with an infection than someone who does not smoke at all.

This is one great reason to take that extra step to stop smoking now! Your scarring can be worse, and your healing can be slower-these are complications that could easily be avoided by throwing away your cigarettes.

Make sure that when you go out in public, you use antibacterial hand cleanser very frequently. Public introduces germs on just about everything, and you need to use your gel to protect yourself consistently.

It is a good idea to not use ointment or lotion around your incision site, as it can be very harmful. Your plastic surgeon will probably give you guidelines on what is acceptable and what is not, and it is important that you follow these instructions very carefully.

After all, many antibacterial ointments will actually keep moisture on your skin and in your incision, which creates an environment that encourages the growth of germs. If you are very careful to follow these guidelines and listen to the council of your plastic surgeon, your recovery will go much more smoothly.
