Making Sure Your Wisdom Teeth are Not Unnecessarily Removed

Having your wisdom teeth removed can save you a great deal of pain and discomfort if they are coming in the wrong way-it can also prevent harmful infections from occurring in your teeth and gums.

However, every year many wisdom teeth are removed unnecessarily for absolutely no reason at all.

If you do not want to pay for an expensive and painful surgery that you do not need, you need to make sure that you are actually in need of the procedure. Believe it or not, up to sixty seven percent of removals do not need to actually occur.

While in many cases removal is necessary, in the cases where it is not, the procedure can actually cause more negative side effects and damage than if they had been left there in the first place. The surgery itself can cause great pain, infection, and tissue damage.

Of the approximately ten million wisdom teeth removed each year in the United States, less than twenty percent of extractions have proven medical indications which would require extraction.

In general, the preventative extraction procedure has become a public health disaster, and is a clear case of medically caused injury.

You need to make sure that you are not one of the people who becomes susceptible to this kind of trauma. After all, the surgery can be a financial goldmine for all of those involved, except for you.

Billions of dollars are made on these surgeries every single year. The first step you can take is to make sure that you have a dentist and oral surgeon that you trust completely.

They should be honest, and worried about your health, not their bank accounts. If you have a genuine doctor who cares about what it best for you, you will be able to trust them, so that they will not take advantage of you.

Medically, wisdom teeth are only to be removed if there are clear symptoms indicating they are doing more harm than good. However, all to often this standard is completely ignored, to pad the wallets of dentists.

Rather, pain and infection are commonly used excuses to remove these buds when they erupt through the gums for the first time. Often, minor treatments are all that are needed to help ease your pain and discomfort.

When the irritated area shows no symptoms, they do not need to be extracted at all-do not let fear and minor discomfort talk you into getting a surgery that you truly do not need. It can end up causing you many more serious problems down the line.

The little tooth that may be bothering you is connected to your central nervous system, through the trigeminal nerve. If you are too quick to remove a painful tooth, it can cause problems to your central nervous system that cannot be repaired.

You may even experience pain and tingling in your gums that will not go away-this is due to permanent nerve damage. It affects many people every year, giving them shooting pains in their head and face-this is not something you want to have to deal with for the rest of your life.

Because of the clear harm done by unnecessary oral surgical procedures, certain medical councils are trying to put more strict policies into effect so that this problem can be avoided. There are other alternatives that you can put to use instead of jumping to extraction procedures.

Most of the time, nothing really has to be done at all. You might have some discomfort from the sprouting that occurs in the gums, but this can go away on its own over time.

Crooked wisdom teeth that do not properly erupt can be brought back into their normal growth patterns by using palate expanding orthodontic appliances, and carefully placed orthodontic wires to guide them to where they need to be in the mouth.

Talk to your dentist about this option, and how it can work for you.

You do not have to be one of the millions of victims that struggles to recover physically and financially from a procedure that they never really needed in the first place. While surgeons get rich, people lose their teeth.

Talk to your dentist about what your actual symptoms are, and what needs to be done about it. If you have a good honest dentist, they can help to lead you in the right direction.
