Dentistry is the science that involves evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the soft and hard tissues of the jaw, the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and related structures. All of those small, individual parts greatly impact the entire human body, making dentistry increasingly important.

Dentistry is exceedingly important for overall health and wellness and should not be neglected. It is a section of the stomatology division of medicine.

Stomatology is the part of medicine that relates to the mouth and its accompanying diseases. It was originally practiced by physicians until it gained its own division of specialists in the early 20th century known as dentists.

In many countries, it requires a 3 year university training medical degree outside of an undergraduate degree. Besides tooth doctors, there are many other aids to oral health services including assistants, hygienists, technicians and therapists.

This particular branch of medicine deals with the examination and practice of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the mouth, the maxilla and the entire face. Some doctors choose to specialize in specific treatments in addition to their general education and experience.

Many surgical treatments are related to the common oral cavity. Decayed teeth are filled with a dental amalgam, dental composite, dental porcelain and precious or non-precious metals.

Most general practitioners perform restorative, prosthetic, endodontic therapy, periodontal therapy and exodontias, as well as performing regular examinations. They are also typically comfortable with treating complex cases such as implants and extractions of third molars, or wisdom teeth.

All must be certified to a certain degree in skill and various disciplines in order to graduate from dental school and gain accreditation. However, you should ask around for trusted reviews of practitioners in your area before you choose your center for care.

After you get fixed up, they may encourage practices of prevention by practicing proper hygiene like brushing and flossing your teeth, fluoride and tooth polishing. They may also apply dental sealants which are plastic materials applied to one or more teeth to prevent cavities or any other forms of tooth decay.

The first dental school was established in Baltimore, Maryland in 1840 and is called the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. The second was founded in 1863 in Philadelphia.

There are many variances between dentists of different countries, however. Studies have found that different dental school graduates, even within the same country in some cases, may practice different clinical procedures to treat the same conditions.

For example, some who graduated from Israeli schools may recommend the removal of impacted wisdom teeth more often than those who have graduated from Latin American or Eastern European schools. There are as many differences as there are distributors of medical procedures.

There are many specialties that are offered within this medical realm. There are approximately 9 recognized specialties in the United States, Canada and Australia.

Becoming a specialist requires training in a residency or advanced graduate training program. There is a certificate of specialty training that is awarded at the end of each residency that is passed.

Many specialties require a special degree such as a masters or doctoral degree to continue. The specifications depend on the procedures wished to practice.

Some such emphases include dental public health, endodontics (root canals), oral and maxillofacial pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthodontics and dentofacial orthapaedics, periodontics, pediatric dentistry and prosthodontics. Those are just a few.

Some more include: dental anesthesiology, special needs, oral biology, forensic odontology, geriatric dentistry, veterinary and aviation. There are many areas to get involved with for varying interests of dental students.

It is a great, secure career because people will always have teeth and will always need help ensuring their health. The job market is great for this industry.

We have traced this study back to the 7000s B.C. with the earliest form related to curing tooth related disorders with bow drills operated by skilled craftsmen. Their methods have been found considerably reliable and effective.

Today, there are many great equipment options in modern fields. One of the most modern techniques involves laser treatment and enhancement.

Some of the benefits of lasers include: stitchless procedures performed, procedures without anesthesia, minimized bleeding, minimized bacterial infections, less damage to surrounding tissue, wounds that heal faster and tissues that regenerate. The benefits speak for themselves.

Laser dentistry is opening doors for dentists who can now perform a wider variety of measures. New options are available everyday to enhance the health of your teeth.
