“How much water should I drink each day?” This is a question many people are wondering every day. Let’s take a look at how much body fluid an average person is loosing through normal body functions every day according to the Guyton’s Textbook of Medical Physiology:
· Skin (not from sweat)–12 ounces
· Lungs–12 ounces
· Sweat–4 ounces (without exercise)
· Feces–4 ounces
· Urine–48 ounces
Add them all up and you get a total of 80 ounces of fluid drained from the body per day. And remember, that’s without sweating due to exercise, work, high heat or humidity. Health condition such as fever, diarrhea also drain more body’s fluid than usual.
You have already heard the recommended “8 cups of 8 ounces” of water each day, which would provide 64 ounces, and that means you would be 16 ounces short based on typical fluid loss, even before your daily exercise routine. It’s plain commonsense to replenish the amount of fluid loss, which is 80 ounces, to avoid deficiency.
People come in all sizes. The larger built you are, the more water you will need to drink because water is account for about 60%-75% of the body’s weight (depending on your age). This formula is easy to remember: drink water in half your body’s weight in ounces. For example, if you weight 160 pounds, than drink 80 ounces of water
Some would argue that tea, coffee, soft drinks, processed juice, and alcoholic beverages should count toward water intake total. But these beverages actually need more water to process the caffeine and carbohydrates they contain; you will urinate more than usual. Therefore, you need to drink even more water to replace the fluid loss.
How much water should you drink each day also depends on your health condition, how much you exercise each day, the kind of work you do, your diet, and the climate you live in. For example, if you run or work out an hour or two each day then, obviously, you need to drink more water to replace fluid loss through excessive sweat. If you urinate more often after drinking the caffeinated or alcoholic beverage, drink more water to replace water loss.
While drinking too much water did not prove to offer extra health benefits, but not drinking enough will definitely harm your health. Keeping balance in the body is one of the major key factors for optimal health. Make sure you drink water through out the day to prevent dehydration. Don’t wait until you are thirsty before you grab your water. The body will not alert you with the thirst signal until you are about 1% dehydrated. Meanwhile, all the normal body’s functions are already being affected. If you still not treating the thirst signal with clean fresh water, slowly, over time, the organs will start malfunction. Ailments and sicknesses are some times just the result of dehydration. Adequately hydration to keep the doctor away, remember to drink enough water every day!
