Laser hair removal is a treatment that utilizes light and pulsation of lasers to remove unwanted hair from the body. It is the most effective on dark and coarse strands. A prime patient for removal has dark locks and light skin. Beams from the laser pass through the skin and focus on the follicles. Heat given off of the laser damages the follicle, thus inhibiting natural growth. This procedure, though effective, does not guarantee permanent removal.
The main purpose for this procedure is to remove hair, but it can also be used to treat pilonidal cysts and ingrown hairs. The most common areas for treatment: upper lip, armpits, chin, abdomen and pubic region. The beams are designed to target melanin or pigment. This is why it is easier to remove dark hair from light-colored skin. This treatment is not as effective on hair that is white, gray or blond. Dark-skinned patients are at risk of discoloration as a result of this procedure.
There are risks and side effects to consider. There is no guarantee that everything will permanently be removed. Still, re-growth may be lighter in appearance and have a fine texture. Common side effects include: crusting and scabbing, change in skin pigmentation and irritation in the area. Some of the less common side effects: blistering, infection, change in skin texture, scarring, and allergic reaction to the numbing creams, laser, or removal gel.
Patients should do thorough research on their doctor. Doctors should be board certified. There are some salons and spas that allow workers who are not properly trained to perform the treatment, so double checking credentials is suggested. To prepare for the procedure, keep out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Also avoid plucking, waxing and electrolysis. These actions can irritate the follicle.
Cost varies. Factors that may impact total cost of the procedure: size of the area and number of sessions needed. Consult with a doctor for more specific price estimates. Some places offer payment plans.
Scheduling a consultation with a doctor before the treatment is important. Doctors can explain what patients can expect before, during and after the procedure. Before the removal, a patient is given special goggles to wear. These protect the eyes from the powerful laser beams. The doctor may then apply a topical anesthetic to the area being worked on. This is done to reduce discomfort a patient may experience.
The doctor uses a handheld laser. It is pressed up against the skin. While this is happening, a patient may feel a stinging sensation. Treatment time can range from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the area. In some cases, multiple sessions are required.
Afterwards, there may be redness and swelling in the area for the first couple hours. The stinging sensation should not last for more than one to two days. It is best to avoid sun exposure, whether it is natural or artificial, for a few weeks following treatment. Final results will vary from person to person. If multiple sessions are necessary, they are usually spaced eight weeks apart. Hair that was targeted during treatment should start shedding within a few weeks.
