Eyelid Surgery: Tips For Speedy Recovery From The Procedure

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgery in which tissue surrounding the eye is removed or repositioned. During the surgery external incisions may be made in the natural folds and creases of the eyelid or in some cases, incisions can be made on the inside of the eyelid.

The entire procedure takes about three hours, and patients can resume their daily activities in a few days, however a complete recovery may take a few months. To speed up the recovery process, it is important to follow all the post operative instructions given to you by the surgeon. Your surgeon may be more specific but here are the general guidelines and helpful tips to follow for a complete and successful recovery:

1. Rest. Take it easy following the surgery and stay reclined, especially for the first few days. You do not have to keep your eyes closed, just relaxed. Watching TV, reading, and using the computer are acceptable activities but may not be very easy if there is much swelling and temporary blurred vision.

2. Let people help you. Make sure that you have a friend around to help you with daily tasks such as taking a bath or household chores for the first three days. Avoid bending over and straining yourself physically.

3. Apply Cold and Warm Compresses. On the day of the surgery you will want to treat your eyelids to cold compress until you go to sleep that night. After the first night you will then want to switch to warm compresses. A clean washcloth wet with warm water works well. Do this at least three times a day for several minutes at a time.

Doing this will help with the swelling and bruising. Use over-the-counter acetametaphin. This should be sufficient in treating the pain. Mild pains are normal, but if you experience extreme pain, call your surgeon.

4. Apply any ointments or antibiotics with your finger. Your surgeon will likely prescribe some form of topical ointment for the eye lids and surrounding area. When applying these, use a clean finger, not a cotton ball or swab during the first few days to avoid leaving cotton pieces behind that irritate the sutures.

5. Avoid getting soap in the incision when showering and washing hair.

6. Keep the incision clean. The surgeon will likely give you detailed instructions of how to clean the area. Keeping the area clean will help avoid infection and other complications.

7. Avoid wearing makeup for the first ten days. It may be tempting to try to cover up the bruising and swelling around the eyes, but cosmetics will just interfere with the healing.

8. Use eye drops for the first few weeks. It is common for the eyelids not to completely close for the first three weeks following the eyelid surgery and this often causes dry eyes. So it is acceptable to use any over-the-counter artificial tear drops

9. Be patient. You may look like you lost a fight for a little while; bruising, swelling, redness, and even a small amount of bleeding is normal and will last for a few weeks. It usually takes patients at least six months to completely recover.
