Exercising with Coronary Heart Disease

Even though exercising is a very important part of developing a healthy life, many choose not to exercise for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons that some people choose not to exercise is because they have heart disease and exercising is quite uncomfortable.

However, exercise could be of particular benefit to these people as it can help their heart become stronger despite the disease. In most cases, health professionals agree that even though it is uncomfortable to exercise it is not dangerous for the heart disease afflicted to exercise.

Of course, working out is also very important for people who are seeking to prevent the development of heart disease as well. There are many benefits that exercise can provide the body that will reduce the chance for things that cause heart disease.

Regular cardiovascular workouts can reduce the likelihood that you will develop high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity. Another disease that is commonly developed as a result of poor cardiovascular strength is coronary artery disease.

Hypertension, strokes, and congestive heart failure can also be developed as a result of poor cardiovascular health as well. However, coronary artery disease generally develops due to the arteries getting blocked with fatty things, cholesterol and calcium.

This process is known as atherosclerosis. When atherosclerosis progresses too far, the blood will not be able to flow into the heart easily.

As the heart begins to suffer from a lack of enough blood, you will probably feel pressure in your chest area. Sometimes it can develop into a dull ache or pain.

When the condition progresses this pain can expand up into the neck area, jaw, left shoulder, and left arm. This pain is called angina and it often indicates that you are at a high risk for a heart attack.

A heart attack will happen when the artery is completely blocked off. People who have coronary artery disease are often encouraged to exercise regularly as it can help reduce the risk level you are at for a heart attack.

If you have concerns about what kind of exercise you should participate in, be sure to talk to your doctor about it. Your doctor will know exactly what kind of exercise will be the best for you.

While you may need to work up to it, running is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercise. It can help you build cardiovascular strength and reduce your risk for a heart attack.

If you currently have a high risk for a heart attack, you may want to consider investing in a treadmill. By working out at home on the treadmill, you will have someone there which can help you should you suffer an attack.

Of course, you will also be able to easily lie down if you start feeling poorly. Treadmills also offer a variety of speeds and difficulties so you will be able to choose the appropriate exercise level for you.

While exercising is definitely encouraged with this condition, you should make sure you get exercise clearance after you suffer a heart attack or after you receive heart surgery before you begin a workout routine again. Your doctor may give you new restrictions, but exercising is still generally a good thing to do.

In addition, you will want to make sure that you do not increase the difficulty of your workout routine too fast or too quickly. You will want to make sure that you do not make your heart work too hard or you could suffer from complications.

Make sure you consult with your doctor before you increase your exercise routine. Your doctor may have you complete a treadmill test to assess the capabilities of your heart so that you do not push it too far in your home work outs.

When you work out, you should stay at least 10 heart beats per minute below the number that will cause negative side effects. Again, your doctor will know exactly how hard you should be working.

Unless you are told otherwise, you should usually exercise three to four times a week. In the beginning, you may want to only exercise five to 10 minutes several times a day.

However, as you build endurance, you should be able to work up to a normal workout time of 30 to 60 minutes. It can take one to six months to reach this point, but you can reach this point.

Make sure that you do not do more than is recommended. However, overtime you should be able to become quite fit.
