Buttock enhancement has been a growing field inside cosmetic surgery. More and more women are looking to accentuate the curves of their derrieres. Most of the time, this involves the insertion of artificial implants. However, new techniques are making it possible for women to enhance the appearance of their backsides using their own fat. The doctors who are pioneering these techniques claim that buttock enhancement through fat transfer is vastly superior to using implants. One doctor noted: “The process is much safer and reduces the risk of infection from silicone buttocks implants, or complications of having foreign material injected.”
When a fat transfer is performed, two distinct surgical procedures are performed on a single day. The first procedure performed is a liposuction which draws fat out of a target area that the patient and doctor have decided on beforehand. This target area is a place where there is an excess of unsightly fat, such as the thighs or abdomen. The second procedure involves the re-insertion of the fat into the buttocks. Because these are both delicate procedures, surgery time is fairly long. A typical fat transfer usually lasts between four to six hours.
Fat transfers can also be relatively expensive, given that two distinct procedures are performed. However, many people choose fat transfers anyway, because of the unique advantages that they provide. Fat transfers, if performed properly and without complication, can give a more natural feel and look to the buttocks than implants, and many people like the idea of improving their body without the insertion of foreign and artificial materials in the body. As another bonus, the area from which the fat is harvested also appears trimmer and more streamlined.
People have been attempting fat transplants for a long time. The first recorded attempt came in the 19th century. Interest has likewise been shown since the invention of modern liposuction technology. However, it has only been recently that surgeons have been able to achieve positive and relatively consistent results. Recent developments in liposuction make it easier to keep fat alive for a longer period of time, which leads to more successful surgeries. Old liposuction methods have been fine-tuned, and some new methods have shown great success in fat harvesting. Laser lipolysis has proved to do a good job of keeping fat cells alive during surgery. The newer procedures of Water Assisted Liposuction and Custom Acoustic Liposuction have proved to be even more successful. Water Assisted Liposuction, for example, has been shown to be able to keep alive up to 90% of the fat removed.
Fat transfers to the buttocks are still relatively new, and it is still possible that time will show there to be unexpected or undesired side effects. Just as with any other cosmetic surgery, fat transfers involve the danger of scarring, bruising, lumpiness or tissue damage, both at the site of liposuction and at the buttocks. The best way to find out whether a fat transfer is right for you is to speak with a surgeon in your area. Fat transfers are beginning to be offered at cosmetic surgery and liposuction centers around the country.
