Electronic muscle stimulation is commonly referred to as EMS. And devices used to create this muscle stimulation are known as electronic muscle stimulators. So, the abbreviation is used in common for both. The process of using electricity to change the way muscles work is often used by physical therapists after an injury or a sports surgery. These therapists are trained to use this process to alleviate pain and stiffness in their patients. Often, the process enhances the ability of the patient to heal more quickly without excess pain.

The use of EMS devices in the U. S. A. Is regulated by the FDA. So you may not encounter treatment of this kind unless you have been sent for physical therapy by your doctor. Basically small electric shocks are sent to the affected area via electrical cords attached to small pads on your body. Certain therapists are trained in the correct placement of the pads, and the right levels of electricity to use for each case. Injured muscles can be helped to move better this way.

Although most EMS devices are found in medical buildings, more and more are turning up in homes and sports gyms these days. The devices must be approved by the Food and Drug Administration before they can be sold to the public. They must pass a battery of tests before consumers can buy them. Common consumer injuries from unsafe products or misuse include things such as burns and shocks. The products can also interfere with electronic devices that are implanted in the human body, such as pacemakers.

Most people buy EMS products to use at home. They want to improve their muscle strength and enhance their appearance. But other users actually use the devices to relieve muscle spasms and pain. And there is a group of users that use EMS to help get rid of muscle tension in their necks or backs. As more and more people spend long work days hunched over a computer screen or tense from long commutes to and from work, the products are becoming more and more popular.

There are many who suffer from all kinds of arthritis stiffness. The pain that comes to muscles and particularly joints may be reduced by using EMS. The process of electronic stimulation also can help patients to move more easily. The tiny shocks also help to bring more blood to arthritic joints.

Some people who have casts on a leg or arm for a long time know that muscles lose some of their flexibility and strength during the time they are in the cast. Some orthopedists will use EMS to loosen up the muscles and make them stronger. Many times, patients have been able to move about more freely sooner due to the treatments.

There are many patients in skilled nursing facilities who have suffered from strokes. When they are so ill that they are confined to their beds for the majority of their day, then EMS may be used to keep their muscles exercised. This helps them to not experience the pain that comes from totally stiff muscles.

Anyone who suffers from chronic pain may consider using EMS for pain relief. The most common areas of pain include the neck, back, and leg, so patients may find that with regular treatment, these areas will experience lower levels of pain. Having an EMS device at home is a practical thing for anyone who has reached the end of conventional medical treatments. As long as the device is FDA approved, and great care is taken to use it correctly, it may be a marvelous thing.

Many therapists around the world are using transcutaneous electronic nerve stimulation as a non invasive, safe nerve stimulation to reduce pain. These machines are often referred to as TENS, and have proved effective in treating osteoarthritis, and chronic musculoskeletal pain. TENS are not to be confused with EMS, which is used for the treatment of muscles, and ligaments.
