When you are expecting, you will probably have many concerns about what you should and should not do because you do not want to harm your growing baby in any way. One of the things that you may have questions and concerns about is flying.

For most women who have not had any complications and for whom the pregnancy seems to be progressing as normal, it is usually completely normal and okay to travel. Of course, it is always recommended that you discuss your plans with your doctor to make sure that it is okay to travel and to make sure that you will not be pushing yourself too hard.

Your doctor will also be able to give you tips for reducing the risk for potential side effects of flying while pregnant. If you have had complications or if you are at high risk for a certain complication your doctor may advise you to stay at home.

Many women find that they prefer to travel between weeks 14 and 27. This is during the second trimester, when most of the side effects of the first trimester have disappeared, but before the third trimester when you become so big that it is difficult to move.

During this time, you usually feel more energetic and your chance for miscarrying the baby is quite low. However, once you reach 36 weeks, you could go into labor at any time.

As a result, it is not recommended that you travel when you are this point. The extra stress could cause you to go into labor while you are on the plane which is the least desirable of all circumstances.

You should definitely get the okay from your doctor before you travel. In addition, you should find a doctor in the area that you are traveling to who can care for your needs while you are there.

Most likely, you will not have to visit this other doctor, but it is nice to have someone selected if something does happen.

If you happen to travel while you are in the second or third trimester, you should carry an information sheet that state your age, when you are due, whether you have had complications with previous pregnancies, if you have or are at risk for certain diseases, the results of pregnancy related tests and ultrasounds, other medical history items, and so forth.

This way, if you go unconscious, the medical attendants will know the best manner in which to treat you. It is very important that you do this, so that they do not administer medication that could harm your child.

Another concern with traveling is whether or not the metal detectors in the security section of the airport are safe for you to walk through. Most of the time, these detectors have extremely low frequencies will not harm you or your child in anyway.

These detectors work on an electromagnetic field. These fields are found around most household appliances that you commonly use.

While these things can be dangerous when they perform at high levels, the low level at which the detector operates is usually completely fine. The wands that some of the security personnel use are also completely safe for you and your unborn child.

The concern for these detectors often stems from the idea that the detectors are actually x-rays, which they are not. X-rays would be harmful to your child because of the radiation.

However, the airport will only use x-rays on your bag. Some airports also use backscatter or millimeter wave machines to scan people.

Backscatter machines do use low level x-rays, but millimeter wave machines are completely fine. In addition, these backscatter machines operate as such a low level that they do not pose a threat to you either.

However, if you are still concerned, you can ask for an alternative way to pass through security. Another thing you should definitely consider before you leave is where you are going to stay.

It is important to do the research to find an inn to stay at which will meet your needs well before you leave. When you find a good place to stay, make the reservation so that you can leave the airport immediately and put your feet up in a very comfortable location.
