Detecting Heart Disease and Preventing

Advertisements

Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States, England, Canada and Wales, killing one person every 34 seconds in the United States alone. Also known as cardiopathy it is an encompassing term for a variety of diseases that attack the cardio system.

This is an ever growing epidemic. The question is what can we do to stop it?

First, we need to understand the forms of it and what causes those illnesses to occur. Information is a powerful tool when it comes to prevention of defects such as this one.

Though each type has different symptoms, here are some of the symptoms for general cardio problems that are similar across the board. The symptoms you experience will also depend on the type and severity of your individual condition.

You should call a doctor if you experience any or all of these or if they become more frequent or severe. By learning to recognize these signs and warnings, you can help save your life and improve your health in the future.

The most common symptom or coronary artery disease is angina, or chest pain. Angina can be described as a discomfort, heaviness, pressure, aching, burning, fullness, squeezing or painful feeling in your chest.

It is often mistaken as indigestion but can be very serious if unnoticed. Though it is often felt in the chest, it may also be found in the shoulders, arms, neck, throat, jaw or back.

Other symptoms include: shortness of breath, palpitations (skipped or irregular beats,) a faster beat, weakness, dizziness, nausea and sweating. Symptoms of a heart attack or a myocardial infarction (MI) include: discomfort, pressure, heaviness, or pain in the chest, arm or below the breastbone.

More include: discomfort radiating to the back, jaw, throat or arm; fullness, indigestion or choking feeling; sweating, nausea, vomiting or dizziness; extreme weakness, anxiety or shortness of breath; and rapid or irregular beats. If any of those signs are present or persist, seek medical attention immediately.

During a myocardial infarction, symptoms typically last 30 minutes or longer and are not relieved by oral medications or rest. These warnings can begin as mild discomfort and can progress to significant, lasting pain.

Some people have no signs before and during a myocardial infarction, also called a silent MI. It can occur in anyone but occurs most often in diabetics.

This is so scary because there is no evidence that it is going on and it can go unnoticed. Thus, it will receive no attention, and the health of the person will only digress.

If you think someone may be having a myocardial infarction, then you should immediately call 911 because of its severity. Immediate treatment is necessary to lessen the permanent damage to your cardiovascular system.

Also, arrhythmia are abnormal heart rhythms and are present in many people who need to improve their cardiovascular health. There are also many warnings of this condition that include palpitations, pounding in your chest, dizziness or light-headedness, fainting, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, weakness or fatigue.

A type of arrhythmia is called atrial fibrillation (AF) and most people experience the following signs associated with this: palpitations, lack of energy, tiredness, dizziness, chest pain and shortness of breath. However, some patients with AF experience no symptoms; sometimes these episodes are also very brief.

Heart failure symptoms include: shortness of breath during physical activity or at rest; coughing that produces a white mucus; quick weight gain of about two or three pounds in one day; swelling in ankles, legs and abdomen; dizziness; fatigue and weakness; rapid or irregular heartbeats; nausea and chest pain. Like valve conditions, heart failure may not be related to how weak your heart is.

You may have many other signs, but your heart function may be only mildly weakened. You may have a severely damaged heart with little or no warnings.

This disease is killing many people as you read on. The important thing to do now that you understand how to recognize them when they are occurring is to prevent them.

Once current issues are taken care of, there is a need to ensure a healthier future that is exempt from these conditions as much as possible. If everyone can individually keep their health in check by exercising and eating healthily, we can be healthier and have fewer problems with this epidemic.

Seriously, the real key is that simple. Start early in your life and in the life of your kids eating healthily and exercising regularly to avoid unnecessary ailments.
