Orthodontics is the specialization in dentistry concerned with studying and treating improper bites. Problems may be the result of irregular teeth, a disproportionate jaw, or a combination of both. Treatment can focus on dental work or include facial aspects as well. Facial growth modification is done for aesthetic reasons to improve the appearance of teeth. However, some orthodontists also restructure the whole face in addition to performing various dental procedures.
Treatment is usually performed by placing metal wires into brackets made of steel or ceramic materials. These wires and brackets adjust teeth into different and more attractive positions. Another method of treatment is to use invisalign. This is plastic that is used to properly align teeth and make them look more level. However, envisaging procedures are more difficult for patients to deal with.
Additional components used are removable plates, headgear, expansion devices, and any other equipment that move the jaw bones and teeth. Using either braces or retainers, teeth can be fixed and set in the right positioning. Retainers are often used after orthodontic treatment has been performed.
Treatments may be limited to teeth or involve reconstruction of the face as well. Afterward retainers are used to keep teeth in their new and improved position. This gives bone a chance to fully reform around them and hold them in place.
Retainers are worn all day and every day for half a year or longer. After this, they are used during shorter times, such as during the night, for as long as necessary. Retainers may not always be necessary, as it is possible for teeth to stay aligned naturally. However, teeth crowd with age and so it is often used as a precautionary measure.
Before treatment is begun orthodontists must make a thorough diagnosis. They must analyze the characteristics of the malocclusion or dentofacial abnormality and determine its cause. Based on this they must then design an appropriate strategy for treatment and explain this in detail to a patient. It is important that patients understand the possible consequences of the suggested work.
Orthodontists are required to earn a dental degree. Between two and three years of post-graduate study is mandatory for qualification as an orthodontist. After this and a few other things have been completed, they often start practicing in either hospitals or their own private businesses.
To become certified in certain countries, individuals must pass an accredited educational program. They must then complete an application, pass a written and clinical examination, and submit an annual fee. Other countries require three years of training followed by two additional years of experience. After these five years an examination must be passed.
Orthodontics is a specialized concentration within the dentistry field that focuses on correcting problems with bite alignment. To become an orthodontist many years of study are required, in addition to passing various examinations. Qualifications vary based on country. The problems certified individuals deal with are often the result of teeth abnormalities, jaw structure irregularities, or a combination of the two. Performed modifications may be limited to the teeth, include the jaw, or extend to a restructuring of the entire face.
