Deciding to Get Liposuction

What is liposuction and why would you want to get it done? It is also known as lipoplasty (fat modeling), liposculpture suction lipectomy, and also lipo (which mean suction assisted fat removal).

It is a cosmetic surgery or operation that is performed on humans in order to remove fat from different sites on the body. Usually it takes place on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, neck, arms, and legs.

There are several people that have health issues because there is too much fat on their bodies and decide to get this operation done. But there are also people out there who are very obsessed with the way they look and may decide to have this surgery performed on them even though they do not really need it.

Some people are under the impression that every little ounce of fat that you do not want on your body can be removed and all of it can be taken off at once. This is not true and can be very dangerous.

Ultimately the person that you decide to choose as your doctor will have the final say in how much they decide to remove, with your input of course, and what they feel is safe enough to do. If too much fat is removed, it produces lumpy dents in the skin and does not help your overall look.

As you remove more fat, the surgical risk also increases. There are some people that claim that they had fifty pounds of fat removed at one time which can be very dangerous.

When you go into this operation, the doctor will put you under either general or local anesthesia. General anesthesia creates a state of total unconsciousness when the drug is given to you and you are basically asleep throughout the entire procedure.

When you wake up, you will have no recollection of the operation although you may be sore as a result. Local anesthesia is a method used to numb the part of your body that is being operated on.

It does not affect your consciousness at all. It helps to reduce the pain and distress on your body. A lot of dental procedures that are performed will usually only use local anesthesia although some procedures like getting your wisdom teeth taken out will warrant the use of general anesthesia.

For pregnant women who have to deliver their babies by cesarean section, local anesthesia is used. This way they are awake for the birth of their baby and can see the baby right after it is taken out of the womb.

Some doctors use it for non-surgical relief of pain while others will use it to help them diagnose the cause of chronic pain conditions. And sometimes both local and general anesthesias are combined together.

Doctors who perform liposuction feel most comfortable working on patients who are fairly fit and healthy to begin with because the risk of complications is much lower. They also prefer their patients not to have smoked for several months.

This procedure has become very popular in the last few years even though the process was invented back in 1974. This is because it has become a little bit safer and more of an obsession with body image.

Back in 2006, liposuction surgeries were the most common plastic surgery procedure performed with four hundred thousand, six hundred and eighty-four patients. This number has continued to climb since then.

The whole process can be very complicated and is not safe for everyone to participate in. Obviously doctors would rather have patients get on a good diet and exercise program to lose the weight by themselves instead of getting it taken off of them in surgery but there are lazy people that want to choose the “easy” way out.

Older people should try not to get their fat removed this way because their skin is not as elastic as their younger counterparts. Their body is limited in what they can and their skin will have a hard time tightening around the new slimmer shape after all of the excess fat is removed.
