As important as it is to restore and preserve the beauty of the human smile, cosmetic dentists are equally committed to patient health and quality of life. These professionals are required to pass all the coursework that general dentists must study, and they must obtain a medical degree in general dentistry before becoming specialists in the restorative dental treatment.
As such, they are every bit as qualified as your family dentist to treat a cavity, perform a root canal, clean teeth, cap teeth with crowns, treat periodontal disease, extract teeth that are too far gone, and replace dentures with better, permanent cosmetic dental implants.
In addition to their medical training in general dentistry, cosmetic dentists pursue additional training and certification in a wide range of specialized procedures and advanced treatment methodologies.
Procedures such as Comprehensive Aesthetic Reconstruction, Practical Occlusion in the Progressive Practice, Neuromuscular Dentistry, Advanced Anterior Aesthetics, and Advanced Posterior Aesthetics are commonly offered at schools such as the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.
A cosmetic dentist may choose to take a diversity of coursework in order to develop a comprehensive skill set that speaks to most common needs that he or she normally encounters. Or, he or she may choose to specialize in one or two particular disciplines, such as laser periodontal therapy or implant dentistry, in order to perfect a skill that is highly complex and in very high demand for patients with extreme dental needs.
In addition to their passion for patient well-being and their relentless pursuit of more advanced dental knowledge, cosmetic dentists also have access to the latest technologies and dental supplies. Consider, for instance, the intra-oral camera that cosmetic dentists use to examine a patients teeth.
This device replaces the primitive and uncomfortable mirror that dentists used to use to poke around in patients mouths. The intraoral camera is light years ahead of this cumbersome tool. The camera resides at the end of a long, thin tube that can be manipulated effortlessly with no discomfort to the patient. It records a digital image of the tooth and gum line, then transmits it to a high resolution color monitor that allows both the dentist and the patient to see exactly where the problems are.
Other sophisticated tools include the ND: YAG laser which is used to perform LANAP. This revolutionary new procedure is being used more and more by cosmetic dentists in the treatment of periodontal disease. Even the most severe cases can be treated with much greater precision and overall long-term results than traditional periodontal surgery is capable of producing.
In addition to advanced technology, the dental supplies and materials that are used by these professionals are also highly advanced. Rather than filling teeth with metal fillings that simply do not belong inside a human tooth, cosmetic dentists use a custom-made composite bonding agent to fill teeth and smooth their outer surfaces.
Metal braces of the past, which looked ugly and hurt for days each time the orthodontist adjusted them, have now been replaced with painless, invisible cosmetic dental braces. Porcelain crowns that look exactly like tooth enamel sometimes hold up better in the long run than natural teeth.
Cosmetic dentists are some of the worlds best doctors. They are just as sensitive to the emotions of their patients as they are to their medical needs, and they want them to feel good while undergoing procedures. Pain is a thing they work to minimize, and expectations are benchmarks they consistently labor to exceed.
