Comprehending Common Foot Ailments

Advertisements

Some of the most uncomfortable and painful health problems have to do with the legs and feet. Seemingly small bodily troubles like these can be exacerbated when an individual has to walk, run, or exercise on the feet.

Any issues that occur are usually observed by a physician or a podiatrist; this type of doctor specializes in the types of ailments that plague the foot and work to better understand how to fix and prevent them. Often, these issues can be both inherited/inborn or develop over time.

Just because a patient experiences pain or problem with their lower extremities does not necessarily mean that they are unhealthy or that something they have done has caused this discomfort; very often, some of the most prestigious and fit athletes are the ones that have to succumb to foot problems. Understanding the different types that can occur, as well as how to prevent and fix them, can potentially help any patient who may have experience with them.

Plantar fasciitis is one ailment that can be very painful, even when the individual is slowly walking or resting. This tendon resides within the arch of the foot and, if damaged, can bring on inflammation and agony during walking or running.

It can also affect the heel, causing aching and stiffness. Some of the main causes are over training in sports or athletic activities, prolonged standing, wearing non-supportive shoes for an extended period of time, weight gain, obesity, flat feet, and a lack of flexibility.

Those that do experience the repercussions of this will most likely find it best to visit a podiatrist right away. Some of the most recognizable symptoms are pain that is present after driving, being barefoot, or getting out of bed or sitting.

Commonly, the treatments that are used to adjust and hopefully fix the problem are arch inserts that are worn in the shoes for more support, resting, stretching the calves, taping the arch or area surrounding it, and over the counter pain medications or anti-inflammatory drugs. Bunions are another common occurrence that can potentially get in the way of proper foot functioning.

A bunion is an enlarged bulge on the side of the foot that is made up of a bursa, or fluid filled sack, located near the base of the big toe. It can also be a type of bony deformity that appears in the same manner.

Many patients that have them notice no problems other than an unsightly appearance, while others experience a great deal of aching and trouble, especially when taking part in physical activity or wearing tighter or closely fitting shoes. Some suggest that they are caused by the footwear that an individual wears on a daily basis, while others speculate that heredity and foot type may be to blame.

Thankfully, bunions can possibly be treated or made to be more livable through certain steps. Many simply choose to make use of wider shoes or those that have a deeper depth.

Footwear that offers stretch or is less binding may also help to alleviate the ache. Custom orthotics, toe spacers, and a change in the types of activities that one participates in may change the amount of stress that the area experiences.

Hammer toes are a foot ailment that develops when there is an imbalance in the intensity of the pull of tendons in the feet. They are characterized by a curling of one or more toes; depending upon the how serious and extensive the stress is, they can be very unsightly and irritating or be mostly unnoticeable.

Corns can often develop on hammer toes because of the rubbing and pressure that they experience within closed-toed shoes. If the problem is severe enough, it may require manipulation of the joint to straighten it out; otherwise, some just use protective padding and exercises.

Ingrown toenails can occur for a variety of different reasons and may cause the patient problems wearing footwear or sometimes even walking. Also called an onychocryptosis, this problem involves the curling or cutting of the toenail into the toe tissue.

Most of the time, this occurs on the big toe and, if painful enough, must be surgically cut and removed. All kinds of foot ailments can affect patients and cause them discomfort, which makes walking, running and exercising difficult; those that experience any of the aforementioned symptoms may want to pay a visit to a medical professional that will assist them!
