Choosing the Right Liposuction Surgeon is an Important ...

One of the first and most important choices a liposuction candidate must make is what surgeon will do the operation. Because lipo is a cosmetic procedure, virtually no insurance companies will cover it, so there is no limitation to what surgeon a patient can go to. The surgeon chosen will play a major role in the safety and results of the operation, so patients will want someone who is qualified, experienced, and skillful. They will also want someone who will effectively communicate with them to best determine the details of the operation.

When looking for a liposuction surgeon, patients should do ample research. They need someone with the proper training and education in the field and a history of successful results. One of the best ways to find a good surgeon is to ask around. If a patient has friends or acquaintances who have had a good experience with a surgeon, that doctor is probably worth a try. Patients may want to make a list of suggested surgeons and then visit each one to determine which they like best. If they do not know anyone who can recommend a good surgeon, then they can look up surgeons in the phone book and Internet and again visit with a variety of them.

As patients research surgeons, they should look for someone who is trained specifically for liposuction, although his residency training may have been in a different field. Some cosmetic surgeons can do an array of surgeries, but may specialize in one other than lipo. Check to see if the surgeon is board certified, meaning he has passed a test for this procedure and proven he is capable of it. Patients should also ask about relative training and experience, such as in dealing with unexpected surgical emergencies. It would be very unfortunate to be the first problematic surgery this doctor has ever dealt with! Ask about classroom and hands-on training.

When talking with a surgeon, be aware of what is considered safe in liposuction and listen for his plans for the procedure. For example, it is generally suggested that no more than 4 or 5 liters of fat and fluid be removed, so if a surgeon suggests more, he may be a bigger risk-taker than what is safe. Also do not let a surgeon operate on multiple body parts in one day, as this is a dangerous risk or do it at the same time as another procedure.

The personality of a surgeon can also be a key factor in the safety and experience of liposuction. Patients should not use a surgeon whom they are not comfortable talking with or feel is not answering their questions and giving them adequate information. Patients have a right to know the details of any surgery they are undergoing, and a doctor unwilling to discuss certain details may be unconfident or incompetent. Beware of arrogant surgeons who are overconfident, for they may also be hiding inadequacies or may attempt more aggressive and risky techniques. Find a surgeon who will willingly describe and discuss any concerns and the safety of his lipo technique.

Also avoid marketing hype. Many liposuction advertisements will make untrue or distorted claims just to get business because they offer poor service. They will also offer confusing, and often expensive, financing packages. Look for surgeons and facilities that use modest, tasteful advertising.

Like any surgery, liposuction can be dangerous if done incorrectly by an unskilled person. When considering this procedure, patients should spend adequate time looking for a surgeon they feel safe and comfortable with, or they may regret a bad decision later.
