If you work on a computer for the majority of your work day, or otherwise are engaged in a fair amount of computer work, back pain is something which should be taken into account. Whether or not you have experienced back pain in relationship to your computer work, it is something which should be prevented in light of the effects of constant computer work.
The Importance of Posture -
Your posture is one of the best ways to minimize discomfort and possible back pain. The most important thing to consider is your posture. You should be sitting in a comfortable, erect position to minimize stress on your back or neck. Your feet should be comfortably on the floor as well.
Keyboard and Monitor Position Matter! -
The placement of your keyboard and monitor is also crucial. Your keyboard should not be too close or too far from you. Overextension can put additional stress on your back, as well as your arms and hands
If your monitor is too high or too low, it can cause stress on your back and more specifically, on your neck. Try to have your monitor as close to eye level as possible. You do not want to look up or down at you monitor.
Other Practical Tips -
Remember to take frequent breaks when you are working on the computer. It is not good to sit in one position for too long of a period. Even at optimal positions, it is beneficial to take breaks frequently.
If you work a great deal on the computer, consider purchasing an ergonomic chair. It is well worth the money if you spend your day on the computer. It can have a staggering impact on your posture, and consequently, on possible back pain.
