Brushing Now to Avoid Paying Later

Even if you are taking the time to brush your teeth everyday you may still run into some dental problems. Although brushing your teeth is a good start there are other hygiene habits that you should instill in your life to make sure to minimize the cost of your dental care.

First, you should make sure that you are brushing your teeth correctly. There are a lot of people that do not understand that there are wrong ways and right ways to be brushing their teeth and because of this lack of understanding they are not brushing their teeth correctly for many years.

When you start to brush your teeth you only need a small drop of toothpaste. Often times people overload their toothbrush with toothpaste and it makes it hard to brush their teeth for the required amount of time.

As you are brushing your teeth you want to make sure you are not pressing down too hard. Many people feel that if they just press a little bit harder they will be able to get more plaque off of their teeth and rinse it away.

Instead of brushing your teeth harder you should just brush them for longer. The average American does not spend enough time brushing their teeth so you may want to set a timer for yourself to ensure you are brushing for an adequate amount of time.

An adequate amount of time is about two minutes. Although this does not seem like a lot of time, if you are not used to brushing your teeth for two minutes you may feel that the two minutes drags on and on when you first give it a try.

To break up the two minutes you should try brushing each section of your teeth for thirty seconds. You can divide the sections of your teeth by the top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right portions of your mouth.

This will help you to really focus on each area of your mouth to ensure you are not missing any teeth. The teeth that are in the very back of your mouth need just as much attention as the teeth that you flash when you smile.

You should also remember that you need to be replacing your toothbrush at least every three months. Many people do not replace their toothbrush in enough time and they end up brushing with bristles that could hurt their gums.

When you are shopping for a toothbrush and toothpaste you will have many different choices. Make sure you take the time to find the toothbrush and the toothpaste that work the best for you and for your mouth.

Second, you should be flossing every day. Although this habit is not as common as brushing for Americans a large majority of dentists would rank flossing as a more important habit than brushing for their clients.

When you floss you are getting out the food and many other particles that are pressed tightly against your teeth. You have to make sure that you are getting these foods out because they are the most corrosive and the most dangerous to the enamel on your teeth.

The more food that sits between your teeth the easier it is for your enamel to start to dilapidate. As your enamel dilapidates you will start to have problems with your teeth and these problems can be painful and very expensive.

When you floss you want to make sure that you have chosen floss that is easy to put between your teeth. If you have dental appliances in your mouth you want to make sure you take those into consideration but still floss all of your teeth.

If you have teeth that are hard to reach because of these dental appliances there are special types of floss that will help you get the job done. When you first start flossing you may see a little blood in your mouth or even on the floss.

Do not fear, this blood is totally normal and it will take your gums some time to get back to a healthy state. When you are flossing on a consistent basis you will eventually be able to floss without having any blood appear.

Finally, you should be washing your mouth with a mouth wash that has fluoride in it. The fluoride in your mouth wash will help you fortify and strengthen your teeth against any decay and problems that may occur.

Taking care of your teeth now will be well worth it in the long run.
