Breast Lifts Are a Form of Breast Enhancement

While it is quite obvious that breast implants are becoming a much more commonplace thing for women these days, it may not be quite as obvious that many of these women have also had a breast lift procedure performed.

Yet, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the number of breast surgeries performed between 2000 and 2007 grew by 97 percent. During the last of those seven years there were 104,176 procedures performed by ASPS certified members. This type of surgery is on the rise and is giving women across the country younger, perkier-looking chests.

A breast lift is known medically as a mastopexy and it is a procedure that gets rid of extra skin from sagging breasts and lifts the breasts up to their earlier positioning. Age, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all be contributing factors to the development of a sagging bust and with mastopexy they will continue to droop and sag indefinitely. The results of the plastic surgery are very long-lasting as well as very satisfying to most patients.

The procedure is performed under either local or general anesthesia usually within the space of two to four hours. Depending on the preference of your plastic surgeon and your preference, the operation can take place in a hospital or in an outpatient clinic. There are a couple of different techniques possible for a breast lift, but the type will be determined based on the severity of the sagging.

For moderate to extreme sagging, many cosmetic surgeons use the anchor incision method. In this procedure, the surgeon makes and incision around the areola to reposition it higher at the end of the surgery.

Another incision is made from the nipple down to the bottom of the breast and then in the crease between the breast and the abdomen. After the incisions are made, the tissues underneath the skin will be repositioned and if implants are desired, they will be inserted at that point. Then the skin is pulled down tightly and the excess is removed.

The areola is put in the correct position and sutured into place with new surrounding skin, although the nipple and areola are never disconnected from the underlying tissue to retain the sensitivity and needed blood supply. The skin is all sewn back together at the original incision points. The recovery from a breast lift procedure will involve rest and sleep for several days. Compression bandages are to be worn for the first week or so post-op. This garment will help the area to heal faster and in the right position.

There will most likely be plenty of swelling and bruising and there may be some pain and discomfort. The latter issues can be managed with prescribed medications from the plastic surgeon. The swelling will subside over a period of weeks or maybe even a month or two.

Patients are asked to refrain from strenuous activity and exercise for a month after the breast lift, although it will only be about a week before most people can return to work and other normal daily tasks. A breast lift will take some time to heal but the results can be extremely rewarding.
