Breast augmentation is a common cosmetic surgery procedure that has become quite popular. A lot of women out there have reaped the benefits of breast augmentation, and sure enough, the results can change lives. However, just like any other surgery especially in the cosmetic world, breast augmentation comes with a certain level of risk.

A well-known complication of breast augmentation is capsular contracture, which refers to a scar or capsules of collagen fibers that surround the implant, making it feel and look unnatural. The capsules tend to squeeze or contract around the implant, hence the name. This condition can cause a lot of pain and can make the breast look distorted. It can occur in implanted breasts in varying degrees; there are severe contractures, while there are mild cases as well. The mild cases, however, can also be quite dangerous since they are sometimes impossible to detect and the condition may be left to worsen. Capsular contracture has been linked to implant rupture or leakage and bacterial contamination. It can be corrected through surgery.

Implant displacement is when breast implants move from their original position following a breast augmentation surgery. Any unnecessary movement to any direction, whether upward, downward, to the left, or to the right, is already considered a displacement. Small movements are not even noticeable, but when the implant starts moving a lot, this should be corrected through surgery. This complication is not common, but the chances of it occurring are higher in cases with bigger implant sizes.

Implant rupture occurs when silicone implants develop a leak. An implant rupture can be dangerous because it can lead to other complications such as capsular contracture. It is said to be more dangerous than saline implant deflation because the leaked silicone does not get absorbed into the body and can trigger an inflammatory reaction. Implant ruptures were common in the 1980s, but now, the newer silicone gel implants used are thicker and less vulnerable to ruptures.

Saline implant deflation is just like a silicone implant rupture, but saline ruptures are more easily detectable. This more commonly occurs when the implant has not been overfilled, which means it tends to fold as you move around until the shell develops a tear. The risk of deflation is higher during the first year after the surgery but considerably lessens after that. When saline implants develop a leak, your breast will go back to its original size within just a few days. Another surgery to replace the implant is the only corrective action for this.

Rippling is one of the complications with obvious physical effects on the breasts. As implied, rippling means the skin of the breasts will form ripples or wrinkles. This usually occurs in saline implants when the saline shifts around inside the shell. Rippling is not particularly dangerous, but it can prevent you from wearing clothing with low necklines. To prevent rippling, the implants should be overfilled, so they will have a smooth, stretched surface.

Infection is a dangerous complication which usually arises almost immediately after the surgery. After two months, the likelihood of implants developing infection is lesser. At least 1% of all implant surgeries are followed by infection. If an infection occurs, it should first be treated with antibiotics and the infected implant should be removed. The difficulty in developing an infection is that one cannot get a new implant until six months later.

In any breast augmentation surgery, there are breast augmentation risks. So if a woman decides to have the surgery, she should be prepared for the risks as well. This means that she should also be prepared for any subsequent surgeries needed to correct any complication that may arise.
