When you talk about going to visit the dentist, most people think of dentist that performs general work. This general work may include teeth cleanings, checkups, and treating cavities.
However, there are many other types of dentists out there as well. These other types often specialize in certain oral problems.
Even if you are used to working with a general dentist, sometimes a certain condition may require you to go and visit another type of specialist. The difference between the general kind and the specialists is that the specialists were required to take more schooling.
On average, most specialists must take about two years more of higher education than a general practitioner. There are many different areas in which they can choose to specialize.
One of the areas of specialization that they may choose is pediatric. Pediatric practitioners focus particularly on working with infants, children, and young teens.
As their mouths are still young, they often face very different problems than an elderly person. In addition, the size of their mouth can make it much more difficult to work on.
They generally focus on preventing future problems, performing oral exams, and repairing any current problems in children. Often, they have a lot of practice in working with children and can make the experience much more enjoyable for them.
They can also help your child relax more if it is their first trip to the dentist. Another area that a dentist may choose to specialize in and become is a periodontist.
A periodontist will focus on treating the gums and on issues dealing with the gums rather than with the teeth. If you are suffering from severe gum disease, it is likely that you will be sent to a periodontist to be treated.
Gum disease is caused by bacteria located in the mouth. Most of the time, it can be prevented through proper brushing and flossing on a regular basis.
However, if it advances, it will need to be properly treated or it may lead to other problems. A periodontist may also perform implants and restructuring or teeth or gums.
Another area that a dentist may choose to specialize in and become is an orthodontist. An orthodontist is primarily concerned with how the teeth line up and whether they are in their proper positions or not.
If teeth are not properly lined up, then they tend to hit each other incorrectly when chewing, which can cause problems later on. It can also make it more difficult to eat and it can result in an uneven smile.
Many teens in the United States often become familiar with what an orthodontist does as they are sent to one to get their teeth lined up correctly. An orthodontist uses braces to perform this task along with other techniques.
Orthodontics often takes several years to complete because you have to move the teeth slowly. It can also be painful at times, but many people consider the final result to be worthwhile.
Another area that a dentist may choose to specialize in and become is an oral surgeon. Obviously, an oral surgeon will perform more surgeries on the oral area.
They are often also referred to as maxillofacial surgeons because they operate on the entire facial or mouth area. The task they are connected with most of the time is removing teeth.
However, they also perform many other tasks. They also will examine and diagnose issues concerning the jaw, neck and head when they are related to an issue in the mouth.
Many people must see an oral surgeon for reconstruction of their face following a car accident in which they broke their jaw. Oral surgeons perform many different types of tasks.
Another area that a dentist may choose to specialize in and become is an endodontist. An endodontist is the person who often performs the not so pleasant operation of a root canal.
Most people do not enjoy going to see an endodontist at all. In addition to performing root canals, they also deal with issues related to problems that happen under the tooth enamel, in the pulp of the tooth, in the blood vessels, or in the nerves.
Most of the procedures endodontist perform are uncomfortable at best. The last area of specialization is holistic.
Holistic dentists use natural approaches for their treatments. They will use non-toxic materials wherever possible.
Sometimes this is known as environmental or biological dentistry because it is environmentally friendly. There are many different types of dentists that you may have to work with in the future.
