People use air ducts in their homes to create an airflow. It is a method used to control the temperature of the air and also the quality in the environment. Usually, homes come fitted with the right framework for the ducts and they are the right width, length and durability for use. The design is often left up to the contractors who put in the ductwork.
Ducts are usually used for ventilation, so they should be kept up to date and properly maintained. They should be kept clean and in good quality. Ducts that collect dust or allergens contribute to those things in the air in the home. It is necessary to prevent even the possibility of spreading germs throughout a building.
Ductwork is generally made with mild galvanized steel. There are fabric ducts, known as air socks, that are used in some instances when the air must be evenly measured. These fabric ducts are made with a polyester material that does not gather condensation and is therefore perfect for moist atmospheres. The fabric works to keep out the moisture while supplying even air throughout the length of the duct.
Flexible air ducts are used in some cases. Flex is a length of ductwork that is flexible plastic stretched over a long coil of wire. The most common use for this would be clothes dryer vents. This is an example of flex. This kind of duct does not supply as much air pressure as the rigid kind of ductwork and is therefore typically used in short lengths.
When cleaning a duct, look for possible rats or other vermin that might be using them for transportation through the home. Look for moldy areas or if the insulation surrounding the ducts has become moldy. If this is the case, insulation should be thrown away, as it cannot be reused in that condition. New insulation should be purchased and installed. Insulation must be used in and around all ductwork to make them work correctly.
A professional can be brought into the building to inspect for problems and to keep everything updated and maintained. They will be able to determine if there are any leaks or cracks in the ductwork or insulation. They will also be able to tell whether or not the ducts require any cleaning or maintenance.
There are chemicals that some HVAC service providers may want to use in the system to kill bacteria and germs. This should be considered after questions are answered and some research is done. The professional would not use a harmful chemical in the air ducts of a home for the obvious reasons. However, it is always logical to get all the facts before making a solid decision.
Keeping the ducts clean can help prolong the life of the heating and cooling system in the home. Although there is not enough evidence to suggest that dirty air ducts cause sickness, it cannot be said that it does not at least contribute to some of the problems people have today.
