A Short History Of Botox

Botox is a well known drug that has been used for some time in cosmetic treatments. It will usually be injected into the desired area and its most common use is in the removal of facial lines. Its popularity has grown due to its quick recovery times, relatively cheap prices and its increased use by celebrities. Although largely used in cosmetic treatment, it can also be used to treat many other illnesses and ailments, despite the controversy that it tends to attract.

The chemicals in Botox are taken from the botulinum toxin. This is more commonly known as botulism. The botulism bacteria is found in canned food that was not cooked properly prior to or after canning. It can also be found in soil, dust and in particular honey. The bacteria is generally not very harmful to adults who have developed defences against it, however botulism poisoning can be fatal in infants and as such it is recommended that honey is not given to children under the age of twelve months.

Uses for the bacteria have been researched since the end of the nineteenth century resulting in a form of the bacteria being purified in the early twentieth century. During the seventies it was tested on monkeys and in the eighties it was used on humans for the first time to treat patients with crossed eyes.

Since the nineties the injections have been used to treat many different conditions. Initially, it was used to treat patients that suffered from spasms or excessive sweating. It is now also used on patients with Upper Motor Neuron Syndrome who have problems with weakened muscles. The drug has even been used to improve the strength and frequency of severe migraines.

Most people know of Botox as a cosmetic treatment. The injections are relatively cheap and pain free in comparison with the many surgical procedures available. It has become commonplace among celebrities and this has spilled over into the general population. Injections are usually given directly into the wrinkles and frown lines on the face and after a short recovery period these lines become more smooth.

There are no major side effects linked with the cosmetic use of Botox. The most common side effects are when the wrong muscle group has become paralyzed and when a patient has an allergic reaction to the drug. The incorrect paralysis will wear off over time, just as it does normally, while those having an allergic reaction should probably receive further testing.

It is important to remember that the effects of the drug are only temporary. When used medically and cosmetically, the effects will usually last for up to about eight months. As such, for those wishing to keep the results that have been produced it will be necessary to have repeat treatments, maybe twice a year.

Over the years, Botox has undoubtedly improved the lives of people with particular medical conditions. While it is also widely used in cosmetic procedures, it is important to remember that the drug is derived from a very dangerous poison. Any use of the drug should be monitored by a legal practitioner and not taken lightly.
