Nail fungus, an infection characterized by disfigurement and discoloration of afflicted toes can be a very distressing infection indeed. It is one that has potential to open up for the nails – and the whole organ on which they are present (whether the leg or the hand), to a number of other even more horrifying infections. And it is an infection that, if left untreated for long, can lead to pain; and ultimately, to a total damage of the nail that is afflicted.

Thankfully, nail-fungus infection can be prevented, and here, we explore some of the ways to protect your toe nails from nail fungus infections.

1) The first thing you can do, towards protecting your toe nails from nail-fungus infections is to make an habit of wearing well ventilated shoes. The truth of the matter is that if you take to wearing shoes that are not very well ventilated; you end up creating the type of environment that is just perfect for the nail fungus that will later come to haunt you to thrive.

2) The second thing you can do, towards protecting your toe nails from nail-fungus infection is to make a habit of keeping your toe nails well trimmed – and clean. The cleanliness bit is particularly pertinent, for if you make a habit of leaving your toes dirty, then you are creating just the perfect environment for nail fungus, and a host of other infections that thrive in dirty environments to attack you. Yet it really doesn’t take a lot to keep your toes clean.

3) The third thing you can do, towards protecting your toe nails from fungus infections is to wear socks that are not too absorbent. Synthetic fibers are particularly good at this. The problem with wearing socks that are very absorbent, especially if you sweat very much in your feet, is that you end up creating the moist environment in which nail fungus – and other harmful micro-organisms thrive. So in this particular regard, the widely endorsed cotton socks wouldn’t be so good; for they tend to absorb perspiration from the feet, creating the most hospitable environment for the nail fungus to thrive.

4) The fourth thing you can do, towards protecting your toe nails from fungus infection – and which is closely related to the third, is to make a habit of keeping your socks clean –and changing them often. You may have socks that are not particularly absorbent, but in as much as you don’t change them often (or worse still, in as much as you let them become dirty), you risk exposing yourself to nail fungus and other afflictions.

5) The fifth thing you can do, towards protecting your toe nails from nail-fungus infection is to use, on a regular basis – a good antifungal aid, say an antifungal spray or power. This is a very proactive step, and in as much as you make it a part of your regular hygienic practices, you would be reducing the chances of your ending up with nail fungus considerably.
